I'm fairly new to having platties and I'm worried about one that I got a little over a month ago. Instead of growing... she's been shrinking!! I've tested the water and everything is at normal levels. She eats, swims happily, and doesn't geett chased or harrassed by the other fish. I'm including a picture of an average sized fish (for me) as well so the size comparison can be made (hopefully!). If anyone could help me figure out what's wrong and how to help her, I would appreciate it so much!! I also bought a new platy today and I think she might be preggers... if someone could verify that would be great too!!!

My 'sick' fish
My 'normal' fish
My 'pregnant' fish?

The 'pregnant' fish does look pregnant.... the black dot on her side is the fry developing. As for the 'sick' fish I dont know sorry :(

hi, i am no expert but i have had platties for a little while now and i ahve had that happen to two of mine before they lose weight and then there mobilty starts to get effected, i read loads of posts on here and different fish keeper books but never really found an answer i tried treating with interpet number 9 for anti internal bacteria, i thought it might be related to that but still lost the fish, however it didnt pass on to the other fish thankgod, i hope somebody else could give you some more answers, best of luck

Hi platymomma and welcome to the forums!

You may have a sick or runt fish there (ie. genetically handicapped or sick with something too complicated to ever figure out), its really hard to know.

Whenever we have a newcomer its important for us to check on some other things, that's why biff ("I LOVE FISH ME" - biff, I love your titles - you keep us laughing  ) suggests we take a look at your water stats. It could be the case that your sick platty is just a little weaker, has less gill tissue etc., and is suffering from borderline or poor water conditions.

If you just say "everything is normal levels", we don't know how you conducted your tests, whether you have good liquid-based kit tests or are perhaps getting incorrect readings from strip tests or perhaps are getting incomplete readings from a LFS or something like that! Let us know about your water testing in more detail. Ammonia and Nitrite(NO2) levels are critical to the health of your fish.
