I was told of a supposedly nice LFS yesterday when I was looking around, and I had to go and do a bad thing and go look around there, I knew I shouldn't because I would end up taking something home with me (which I did) but I went anyway.

It was pretty amazing, I have to admit, they had keyholes, and discus, and really freaking big angelfish, and loads of kribensis at a cheap price (unlike the 8 dollar a piece ones at the place closer to home) and really cute tanganyikan cichlids and rummy nose tetras which I had never seen in real life before (and god are they lovely)

Anyways, I found some apistos there, and I was dying to give them a go. They weren't extravagant looking in the slightest, but they're also tiny as all hell. My little 1.5 inch black skirt tetras put their size to shame.

Luckily, I've had no dispute yet. I was a little afraid that my firemouth would rip them to pieces, but he hasn't been aggressive since. Well. Ever. I've actually never even seen him flare his red throat before.

I'm assuming these guys are too young to be gendered, but I guess it's possible they're not. How big are they before they start showing more male or female traits? These two look definitely female to me, if they're not too small to be gendered. I'll get some pictures up after work.

With my firemouth being the big wuss he/she is, would it be smart to add a male apisto to the tank if both these ones are female?

its possible you might have a problem once the apistos are big enough for the firemouth to bother with. saying that it depends a lot on the inividual fish. one of my friends keeps a firemouth some kribs, and has no issues. yet the same firemouth went absolutely mental when another firemouth was added, and removed very quickly.

Post pics, most species start sexing out around an inch or so.
Alright, I'll get pictures up in just a moment, gotta get some decent ones first, little guys like to move a lot

Firemouths don't tend to get along with other firemouths unless they're paired, as with a lot of common SA and CA cichlids. I bet mine would go mental with another firemouth in the tank, too.

one of my apistogrammas in comparison to my thumb (which is also quite small)

When I saw the post saying your a horrible person I thought you through an oscar in with your fish or something Lol.

I wasn't sure what to think reading the title lol. I thought you like wrecked some huge sale at an LFS like a guy wanted a $50 pleco and a $30 cichlid and another $200 fish for his like 5 gallon tank lol.

Nah, I put the oscar in my 1.5 gallon tank with my flowerhorn, arowana, and jack dempsey

they still get along great :good:

I'm a horrible person cause I keep buying new fish even though my tank is gonna be like mega stocked when all these guys grow up.

Caucatoides? If so males will start showing color in the tail fin at a bit over an inch. Looks like they're under an inch, so they have a little way to go.

yep, they're cacatuoides. What do the females look like, I can't really seem to find any pictures?

they look like that. they will turn yellow when breeding though. which variety did you get? just curious about that.

Ummm.. I don't know  they were sold simply as apistogramma cacatuoides. These were 2 of the 3 that were in the tank, all the same size and appearance, so I couldn't really tell the genders apart by taking a gander or what variety they were or anything. Just kinda took a roll of the dice, cause this was my first time ever seeing apistogrammas in colorado.
