My mate hasn't got enough mature media to donate but he says I can squeeze his sponge out and add the contents to my tank. Would this help or just be a waste of time? Thanks

yes, definately of help - even just squeezing out the filter media you'll get a fair bit of bacteria, and once it's had a few days to accumulate in your filter, it should build up its numbers pretty quickly!

If you can squeeze it directly to your filter media as well as into the tank water, this would be even better :good:

Yes it would help a bit, don't expect miracles from it but it should give it a kick start. get him to squeeze it out into a small amount of tank water, then open up your filter and pour this directly over your media. :good:

Depending on what sort of filter you have, and if your friend has a spare plug socket, could you run your filter in his tank for a while? That's how I matured the Fluval 3 for my 12 gal. I stuck it in my mature 30 gal community tank for 2 months.

Thats probably the best option tbh.
