If I added a shrimp to my tank would i be able to add extra fish? If this is true, which type of shrimp is the best to buy?

I'm 99.99999999% sure the answer is no. Where did you hear that?

I cant remember where I heard it, it sort of just popped up in my head when I was thinking of what fish to buy

Hang on, i thought you were asking if it opened up another 'slot' for a fish, sorry for misunderstanding. Are you asking if shrimp take up the same kind of space and bio-load in the aquarium? If so it depends on the shrimp.

If you are saying you are 100% stocked now - adding shrimp will increase the bioload and not reduce it and therefore you will not be able to add more fish.

They may clear up algae (which is actually good for fish not bad) but they will not 'CLEAN UP' the tank for the fish, they will in fact will add to the nitrates in the tank and use beneficial nutrients that could be used by the fish.

They use less bioload than most fish but will not reduce a fishes bioload

I think what you probably heard was that within reason, you can afford to add shrimp to your tank and it won't count towards your stocking (same goes for snails). They won't increase your stocking space, but their bioload is so small you can safely ignore them unless you're going to add large numbers.
