Hey guys! :good:

I have an approx. 50L hexangonal tropical aquarium and want to change the layout however I don't know what to do because of the shape  We have 3 silver dollars who love to eat plants so we are limited to plastic plants and moss, unless anyone knows of an extremely hardy plant which they won't eat.

I like the idea of sand and drifwood tanks but don't know where to start! Also I will need a kind of cave or shelter for my pair of Kribensis - I've seen coconut caves which look really cool but, again, ideas are welcome!

This is what the tank looks like just now.

I know its a bit of a weird thing to ask - "please design my fish tank" but any sort of designs or layout ideas would be greatly appreciated. :D

I hope you guys have more ideas than I have had!

i have basically the same tank and this is what i have done:

it has a large piece of bogwood, and some rocks. plants are vallis, amazon sword, a large floating plant and a moss ball but i dont think those plants will be much help for you. but if you look the at picture then it might give you some inspiration. it is currently my betta tank with cories.

i think in your case more plants would make it look alot nicer, like cover the back of the tank and plants. i think the tank is lacking in a bit of colour but that just my opnion

hope that helps :good:

Have read that anubias plants are hard for fish to eat on. Have you tried other rhizome plants like java fern?

Thanks tom os!
Your tank looks beautiful! I really wish I can get my tank to look as nice as yours! I really like the driftwood etc. but I wasn't sure how to do it in a hex tank, but you've shown me how it's done! :D
Are they just plain pebbles? I like the way you've sat them up like that - very simple but very nice too. And please do give your opinion - I appreciate honesty :)
The plants look really dodgy I know - it's because of our extremely vegetarian silver dollars... however... :hyper:

Aha! There's hope! We haven't really tried many live plants - I think the best plant that we had was an onion plant which was ok for a while but was eventually defeated by our fish. I can't remember what plants we've tried - our oldest silver dollar is 16 years old now so we've 'made do' with plastic for quite a while! Thank you very much for your recemendations though - I'll probably try to find some and try them in the near future. :good:

Any other ideas or suitably hardy plants guys?

Thanks

Claire :fish:

that tank is way overstocked angels and silver dollars need at 50 gal

Thanks tom os!

the pebbles i got when i went on holiday from tenerife, they are volcanic rock. i was a bit wary at first of them changing the water stats but they have been fine

i think a big focal point like a large piece of wood that will strech to the surface (mine cost me £4) then some smaller ornaments, caves etc at the bottom would look good

good luck :good:

It's a miniature koi angel - it doen't grow any bigger than that.

And we've had the silver dollars for 16 years and they ain't gettin any bigger either.

Also, I'm 15 - my dad choses what fish go in - I'm in charge of looking after them.

I don't mind honesty but man...

I need to get looking for some wood etc. :)

I can try but he's become quite attached to them over the years

How big do the boffins recommend min.? I presume too big for us to even consider lol

Also - since silver dollars are known for being idiots and very destructive, I guess it would be really hard to get someone to take them - especially since they aren't the youngest kids in the crowd :S

Anyway, I'll try talking to him. He is a bit fed up of them being such plonkers all the time so I might be able to push him enough to make him re-home/sell.

While I'm at it though - any more ideas?
