Hi,

I am looking to set up a new tank (aqua / viv / terra / whatever) and thought this might be the forum to search for some ideas.

The one thing this project must be, is based on my current unused fish tank which is about 36 X 12 X 20 inches. I dont have a proper fitting lid or lights, so that is something i will obviously have to buy / build. I have got an internal filter and underwater heater if needed, and some low voltage halogen spot lights (which are awful for fishkeeping - algae took over the tank in days)

I am thinking about going a bit different to fish, but I really cant make up my mind. Initial thoughts are something like salamanders, newts or mud-skippers (although i dont think i have the space for the latter) or maybe even frogs / toads, or back to aquatics with puffers or something oddball. Or maybe a lizard of some kind? (as you can see, i dont really know what i want!)

My preferable requirements are:
not too big set-up costs. I am happy to 'improvise' with DIY where possible
Quite low maintinance. I dont mind doing water changes or general cleanup but i dont want to do it that often!
Be fed pellets / dead stuff. this isnt a deal beaker, but i would rather not have a cupboard of crickets etc.

I have a good LFS in Swallow Aquatics not too far down the road, where i know they have a great selection of fish and a pretty good selection of lizards and all that stuff, but i havent really paid them that much attention, so i cant be sure what the do / dont have. I also have the usual pets at home etc nearby.
If my mind is won over by something the shops dont have, i dont mind using the internet if anyone could recommend a good site

If your not too against crickets and other insect foods, perhaps you should consider a group of crested geckos (Rhacodactylus ciliatus). Some of my favorite geckos, they are so entertaining to watch and incredibly easy to care for. Of course, you would need to invest in a proper lid, but not the expensive lighting and heating that some other reptiles species require. Plus, they now are available in such an amazing array of color morphs there is sure to be something to fit anybodys tastes!
