Ideal Tank/betta Bowl Sizes

Looking good!
I was browsing for small tanks today. looking partly for ways to separate male and female bettas before and after breeding without causing agro to my livebearers (in the tank I need to move the females to after breeding), and partly looking for fry tanks to bring up baby acaras.
I discovered that the LFS I bought my second to last tank from also had stone-decorated large "wine-glasses", presumably meant for fish. Now, even if a glass like that holds 1-2 liters, how in the name of heaven is the average impulse buyer supposed to know that these aren't suitable homes for any fish whatsoever? Most people have no idea that a fish keeper needs to know a thing or two about chemistry, as well as be prepared to change water daily if using small containers?
An LFS like that actually deserves no more business from people who know even the slightest thing about fishkeeping. They're the real culprits, not the people who buy the stuff, thinking they've had expert advice from the store. When I buy almost anything else, the storekeepers give good advice, resulting in a generally happy customer. How come fish stores seem to do better when their advice causes death and havoc? How do we combat that general trend, apart from most of us choosing our fish stores with care as soon as we've picked up the basics?
