I was walking among the mangroves downtown Florianópolis (BR) today morning, and a fisherman caught this poor guy. I guess it's a puffer, but anybody knows which one? Flat white belly, about 20 cm in length.

You'll be all glad to know that the lucky fish was immediately released.

Hmm… search for Sphoeroides… seems to be one of those species, perhaps Sphoeroides testudineus.

Thanks Neale,
yup, it looks like one of them, possibly testudineus. Never heard of these Tetraodontidae, there's a lot of species in this genus!

And of course the fisherman got rid of it, it's one of the toxic ones!

Cheers!

Glad to help. These are very common Atlantic Ocean puffers, and I've seen many of them along the coast of Florida. They can do well in aquaria, but are very active so need a lot of space.

Cheers, Neale
