This fish is currently for sale on ebay, the seller doesn't have a clue what it is and a guy i know from another forum is interested if we can come up with an id, so any thoughts?

The image he has on ebay makes it look like a Paratheraps Bifa but this image he has mailed over makes me not so sure

Hmmmm I'm only just starting out on centrals at the moment but maybe a Vieja fenestrata or Synspila? I think it looks most like the first one but the colours are off but the line is in the right place and looks like it could run through the eye when they colour up etc?

Thanks Wills, yeah the colours put me off thinking it was V.frenestrata, although i think i may have found it?

Paratheraps sp. 'coatzacoalcos'

Those are the best two pics i can find, what do we think?

Hmm not a synspila, the black line doesnt go all the way along, it stops at the base of the tail. Fenestrata looks more like it, but the colouration is more red/pink towards the face area, unless this is still juvi in which case that would come later.

Edit after above post: Looks the closest match Davo.

Yeah I would say your on the money with that one. The amount of .sp fish coming around now is really starting to bug me, I mean people like us that have the forums to talk on can often work out whats going on but with some of the sp. stuff coming so readily available Im sure there have been more than one or two people that have been ill prepared for the unusual fish they got. Tell you what though I want to be a scientist just stick .sp after something (usually the place that they find them or something with the way they look) and its off down the pub!

Thanks guys, yeah Wills I agree, I mean its hard enough trying to keep track of what species classifications everything is in, without having species that aren't even given a adequate name to begin with.
