Hi Guys,

I went to the lfs this week and came home with 6 Dwarf Flag Chiclids

When we got home we saw differences in some and looked through our books and on the net for the fish to compare..

But were still unsure as to what fish we realy came home with..

I will post pics of the 2 types that we see..perhaps they are the same type and different sexes but one seems completly different and appears to be the Flag and the others look like a cross between a female guppie and a danio or something lol

Anyways here are my 2 pics any thoughts as to what i realy have are appreciated..

This is the Odd one out from the 6

and there are 5 of these guys

Nice fish!

I'm rubbish at guessing so take no notice of me, the top one looks like a golden ram but not sure about the others...

To me, they all look like flags....

Hi Ludwig

Would the top one be a male then and the bottom be females?

The top lad has different colours and has a wee smiley mouth and the bottom lads have a completly different colour and fin shapes and the top guys deeper bellied..

I googled Flags and came up with pics that were similar to the top fella and other types but nothing resembled the bottom pics... Links I found that looked like the top guy were: Check Here My guy does go the dcolour of the pic in the link but he is real hard to get a pic of.

They are all fine and are getting along realy well although the top lad sems more timid and shys away from the front at times where the others are quite bold..

Realy hard to get photos of I just couldnt get my camera to focus to get clarity of pics for you all to see..

Cheers

the top pic is a dwarf cichlid and is either Aequidens dorsiger or A. curviceps. The other pic is American Flags (Jordanella floridae) and are a type of killifish.

Hi ,
Thanks for that, Ive googled again and came back with this for the second pic with your name and it seems to look very similar to what I have See Here

Tag..

I'd say so.... To quote Dr. Axelrod once again,... "The male is the more colourful of the pair, showing brilliant red spots on his body and fins, which the female lacks". Now I cannot make out if it is a reflection of the pink flower visible on the lower part of the top one's body, but with line breeding since the 70's (when my book was published) I'm sure so many colour variations are now available that all does not hold true anymore.

They do however need heavily planted aquarium of over 50 gal capacity, have a wide temperature range (between 68 and 80 Deg F) and are American Flagfish (Jordanella Floridae)

Hi,
Im now reading that they like a planted tank and I have no plants in my tank due to poor success with plants in the past... So I guess id better get summat for them eh?

Any suggestions on plants to get for these guys that wont be too much work for me?

The tank they are in is the Main Tank Link in my signature and as you see its all artificual plants I have just now

Thanks again..

Laetacara (Aequidens) curviceps ...
And Jordanella floridae (American Flagfish) looks like 2 females form the photo.
Regards
BigC

If you have a light on the tank then some good plants to try include Ambulia, Elodia, Ludwigia, Hygrophilla polysperma, Amazon Swordplants & Vallis.

Try adding some liquid iron fertiliser (something like Sera Florena) and have the lights on for about 12hours per day. The plants should do pretty well then. If you start getting lots of algae then decrease the lighting period.

Thanks I will try and source those out locally and give the live plants another go...

On the flags in the second pic, the bottom one is a definate female, the one above looks to be a young male. Both sexes will have the spot on the dorsal, but the male will loose his.

This is what the male will look like when he gets bigger. And if you notice the photo credit, that is my photo.
