Hello fishkeepers :look:!

I currently have a well established Rio 125L tank with a number of rainbowfish in there.

I have just moved to a new bedroom in my house, which has opened up some more space.

I'd like to run a freshwater nano-tank.

I am, however unsure where to start with these,

could anybody reccomend a good tank with all the features I need built into one? (Filter/heater)

How small is too small when it comes to these tanks?

What would be the best fish to keep?

Thankyou for your time in reading this,

Tim.

I believe there pictures of nano -planted- tanks in a section in the planted section or at least any number of pictures in among the different journals. Its possible that looking at some of these would give you some ideas. The range of setups called nano is wide.

There are some very nice tanks on the market at the moment, some expensive and some not so expensive.

My favourite at the moment is the Arcadia arc tank, available in either 20 or 35 litre variants, I may even set up one of these myself, it comes with a filter, but you'll have to buy a heater separately. Denerle have a range of tanks available in 10,20 an 30 litre variants, these were designed with shrimp in mind, but a small heater would allow you to keep some nano fish. Then there are some Aquaone tanks that are quite small, have discreet built in filtration, and pretty good lighting, no heater again though.

You can go as small as you want, some have gone as small as 15ml with a few strands of java moss (the vessel was made from the lid of a cocktail stick container) obviously 15ml isn't suitable for fish, but in your situation, anything from 15-35 litres would be fine.

The best fish are those that don't get very big, so nothing bigger than 1-1.5 inches really, here are a few of my favourite nano fish and invertabrates:

Ember tetra
Boraras rasboras
Jelly bean tetra
Endler
Small Shrimp
Smaller species of Coryoras (pygmeaus, hasbrosus, hastatus)

There is also a nice looking 17l aqua box made by pets at home. You'd need a heater but it's only £29 for the tank, light and filter which I personally think is a good deal.

Hi there :D

Heres an early pic of mine, a lovely little buy, although the filter is way too strong fro the tank, had to replace with a HOB filter.

Everytime I see one of those I want to buy one and get a betta... I just can't justify more fish/tanks when I already have to move my shrimp tank backwards n forwards from Sheffield to nottingham twice a year.

Sorry to Troll your thread but i would like to ask nurglepuss a question regards this setup, I currently have exactly the same tank and was wondering firsly what HOB filter did you get and secondly are those real or fake plants?

The tank in the picture above looks great, who makes it? I've just been to a few of my local fish shops, the Aqua-el Shrimp 10/20 look good, but they are £50 & £55. The one that Curiosity mentioned sounds good.

What 'wattage' heater should I get for a 15-30L tank?

25 or 50 watts, somewhere in between if you can find one, I believe the tank above is a 'fish 'r' fun' tank.

^^ It's not. It's a pets at home own brand. The frf tank that it's based on is significantly smaller size wise and therefore volume wise.

The basic rule of thumb for heating a tank is 3W-5W of heater per gallon. So Dinky stig is spot on with anywhere from 25W-50W

@ Oneblondebrow:

I went for the Eheim Liberty 100

Seems to be chugging along grea, and fits exactly into place (very exactly!), also the transparent 'lid' that comes with it has a break away section that also very closely fits it.

The plants are real :) all gotten from petsathome. They weren't doing to well at first, but the red one (sorry not got name atm) has grown much taller, curving accross the surface, and the green one is sending out shoots, the broad leafed one has produced new leaves, and my recently added zebra nerite is consuming the hair algae that came with it :D

I'll add more pics to my own thread soon, thanks and very sorry for continued threadjack!

hair algae that came with it :D

I bought a Anubias on a cocnut cave, came with java moss and hair algae  , fortunately I had many moss balls and large plants in the tank to consume up nutrients when dosing the tank with Seachem Flourish Excel I noticed a lot of the algae started dying and breaking away. Lovely anubias though, is actually really well established isn't tied down or anything.

I've decided I will get this 17L one from Pets at home. I will also need to buy a 25Watt heater as that seems to be the best size for it, can anybody reccomend a cheap heater?

The other alternative would be to keep it coldwater, but this would obviously restrict my fish to some WCMM right? If not what other fish could go in there? If it was coldwater would I be restricted on plants too?

The marineland visi therm heaters are pretty good. I'm not sure what you would be able to find at your lfs where you're at but those are pretty common. Pricing may vary as well.
