I recently got an aquarium and two of my fish have ich. One of them has it pretty bad, I see the white spots all over him and the other one has it a little bit. There are about 4 other fish in the tank (10 gallon) but some are sensitive to the salt and meds so I can only do the heat treatment.

I just want to make sure I am doing it correctly.

Yesterday the heat was at about 76 and today it is around 79/80 (I am trying heat treatment) I changed some of the water today... probably about 2 gallons of it. I also made it so the filter drops more, a little more of a splash, like the water hits the top more so that helps with the oxygen I hope.

I am not really sure what to get the heat up to though and how long to keep it that way.

AmI doing it alright so far and should I change some water everyday?

Thank you in advanced, I am really worried.

The heat speeds the cycle of the parasite up.
You need to add a whitespot med or you will lose them.
What type of fish are they.

You will have to issolate the frog to another tank and use a whitespot med.
What type of tetra.

They are neon tetras.

Does the frog need a filter because I have a small temporary tank but not an extra filter. When I add the medication what should I do?

Thanks

Don't know anything about frogs. Sorry. Ask in tropical discussion.
Neon tetra with some meds you have to half dose.
Read instruction carefully that you can use the full dose with the fish you keep.

Raise temp to 30.
Increase aerationa as the high temp and med reduce 02 in the water.
Remove black carbon from filter if you use it.

Thank you so much for all your help I am going out now to buy some meds. How do I increase aerationa? Will they be okay without the filter for a while?

i just battled a case of ich in my tank. had the temp at 82 deg F, follow directions on the med u choose to use. Malicyte green usually recommends halving the dosage for scaleless fish such as tetras. u can use meds that have copper sulfate, which are safer for scaless fish, but require longer periods of usage. i added salt to the water as well as that helps fish deal with the stresses of disease and medication a little better, i have livebears though and they are tolerable to a little salinity in the water. i also did a 25% water change before each dosage of med and gravel vacced each time. Ich parasite larvae hide in your gravel and it helps to remove them if you use a gravel vac. as wilder said remove any carbon from ur filter, as the carbon will filter out the medication, which makes it useless. i treated my fish for 10 days, they had a mild case of ich and everything seems to be goin well now. i'd talk to ur LFS rep and see what they have in stock to treat ich for scaleless fish, there's a ton of stuff on the market. just be aware that ich can lead to secondary infections in fish, so be sure to watch ur fish carefully to mkae sure they dont come down with anything else.

there's a few air pumps on the market that you can use to increase airation, they usually make them according to tank size. u can pick one up for around $20, plus cost of airstones and air lines. all together it shouldn't be more than $30.

Thanks Pabs,

Looks like you did a great job fixing the ich in your tank. I went to the fish store and they told me I could just take the bio bag out of my filter and just use it without the bag for the alteration. I ended up purchasing quick cure and he said in 5 days and after a 25% water change it should be good.

Where did you get a gravel vac from?

Thanks for all your advice!

Taken from the link just incase it dosn't work.

Shake Well Before Using
Before administering any medication, it is wise to check your water quality levels to ensure they are within their acceptable ranges. Remove carbon from filter before use. Add 1 drop per gallon daily for all fish except those of the Tetra group. FOR TETRA: Add 1 drop per 2 gallons daily. FOR MARINE FISH: Add 1 drop per gallon daily in a bare aquarium. Replace carbon 24 hours after last treatment. Maximum dosage: 3 daily treatments. If further medication is required, perform a 25% water change before administering another treatment cycle. Water will turn blue during treatment. This is a temporary condition and will disappear in a few days. Change 50% of water at any sign of distress during treatment.

DOSAGE FOR FISH EXCEPT TETRAS:
1 ml treats 18 gallons
1 teaspoon treats 90 gallons
1 capful treats 250 gallons
1 ounce treats 500 gallons

DOSAGE FOR TETRAS, SENSITIVE & SCALELESS FISH:
1 ml treats 36 gallons
1 teaspoon treats 180 gallons
1 capful treats 500 gallons
1 ounce treats 1000 gallons

Thanks again for all your help. I began the treatment yesterday and just put in the second dose. The one fish who had it a little is all better now, no more spots. Now that bad news, I noticed all the the fish started to attack the sick fish and really tore him up bad... I got him out of the tank into a bowl but he seems really bad and he's bleeding. I think he will probably die. My friend went out to get a divider so I could put him back in the tank with the heater and filter... any tips on anything I can do to help him I am really worried.

Thanks

Bless Him.
Sadly fish will attack weak and sick fish.
Does he have internal bleeding. Where is he bleeding.
Can he maintain his balance in the water.

I am not sure if it's internal. His skin just looks very raw and I saw blood around his eyes. He's staying at the bottom of the tank and does have a hard time keeping balance, staying the right way up.

I got him back in the tank with a divider so he has heat and the filter (without the biobag)

I am pretty sure he will pass he just looks so bad.

Ok so he just passed away :( I am really sad about it but at the same time i know he was in a lot of pain.

Do you think I should stop the ich treatment now since he was the only one left with it or should I continue with it untill it is supposed to be over?

Thank you
