Well, this guy from my work (Petsmart) found one of our Ice Blue Zebra cichlids that was carrying and he made her spit up the young. Now he didn't even want the young so instead of letting them die I've taken them home and they're in a 6gallon grow out tank with a sponge filter. The fry aren't even free swimming yet and all of them have their yolk sacs still attached. How long does it take the fry to fully consume the yolk sac and become free swimmers?

i think it's just a few days, but im not entirely sure.

Yeah, it is about 3-4 days before the yolk sac is gone. But they must be fed immediately after the sac is gone (about 3-4 times a day).

Perfect, thanks much. i've got about 35 babies ^_^ I'm hoping for atleast 10 to survive at the minimum.

IME if there is no predation, mbuna fry have a pretty high survival rate. I think I was averaging around 80%.

Theres no preds in the tank, its a 6gallon tank just for them unfortunatly 3 died this morning do to god knows what, I noticed that a few died at my work too so mabye just the weak?

Yeah they got Petsmarts up in Canada, lol we actually know how to take care of our animals at our store :p

Thats cool you have fry, good luck with them. I have just found 3 fry in my main tank I never even knew were there, so if they have lasted this long then they should be ok.

I do have a plan for them in the future, I plan to keep about 3 or 4 of them and sell the rest to Big Als cuz they'll pay me about $1-$1.50 for each.
