Ok, Im either going to get a 40 gallon aquariums that is shaped like an octigon, or who knows what else. thats what Im probably going to get unless someone tells me I shouldn't. I was thinking of getting a pair of convicts, or another one, I can't really remember the name of the chiclid, I think it was brevis or something. I would probablt only get those fish, and eithre ghost shrimp, coloer pleco, or the albino thingies. And Should I get a rectangle aquarium? does it matter? I probably cant go above $40
Thanks in advance guys!

oh damn, I meant 40 gallon, not dollars, sorry!

I would go with a rectangle tank rather than an octagonal one with cichlids, more length. Also, ghost shrimp won't last too long with Convicts, let alone any cichlid to be honest part from maybe Dwarfs. If you go with a pair of Convicts, I wouldn't really advise adding any other fish, as BREEDING pairs of Convicts are terrors.

Maybe try some less aggressive Cichlids - Keyholes, Rams & Appistogramma. That way you could mix the Cichlids in with some decent sized community fish aswell - Danios, Tetra, Plecs (<6-8") and MAYBE the Ghost Shrimp!

Good luck! Remember to reasearch before you buy!

I would definately go with convicts for those beginning in the cichlid world, but as DevilsAdvocate stated, the ghost shrimp wouldn't last long, that would be the same for with most of the cichlids I know of. :D

if your tank was larger maybe severums, they are beginer fish but they get MAHOUSIVE!!!
what about firemouths? they are suposed to get 6 inch. but i have 4, 2 are about 2 inches, and the other 2 about 5 inches. they are peacefull and very colourfull, easy to breed, but like any cichlid aggrtessive during breeding,
did you ever think about the lake tangynika cichlids? they have all the malawi characteristics with a 4 inch size limit, excluding the frontosa cichlid hehe :p they are colourfull interesting and easy to keep, i had a tangynika set u pfor over 2 years before i went south american cichlid.
they are well worth the time and extra expense. hope that helps.
