LOL, tell them would they rather you got the tank and had fish as your hobby than spending it on drink/drugs/cigarettes.

Hi fishlover900 :)

Why don't you try getting one or both of your parents interested in fishkeeping too? It's a great hobby for the whole family to share.

If you can get them curious enough about it to join TFF, we will help them understand why a bigger tank is usually a better tank, and how to help you succeed in setting one up.

Who knows where that could lead. ;)

Inchworm is totally on the money with that answer. Since my wife got more involved with aquatics, deals on equipment are no big deal, within reason. We really have a lot of fun doing this together. Went from 2 tanks to 14 in just under 2 years. Even if you don't get this new tank, still try to get them involved. There are always deals to be had on used equipment somewhere.

Tolak

Gotta admit I wouldn't smash it I would reason with your parents and tell them that 5g aint really big enough. Tell them that if you got a bigger tank you will sell the smaller one in order to try to get a bit of money out of it. Would be a waste to smash a tank just to get a bigger one.

I am a parent. If I were you I would say how nice it would look in their lounge(I know someone else said that) and also stress the fact that you are getting it for free, Free is a parent's favourite price! Filling it with gravel, plants, fish etc is not too dear. And stress how educational it is. Also larger tanks are supposed to be easier to maintain.

Look on the internet at pictures of fish you'd have in the 20. At the convinient time they're looking over your shoulder.... They will ask you what you're looking at, you say in a wistful voice 'Oh, I'm just looking at fish I could keep if I had that bigger tank....' Also say it could be your easter present- instead of chocolate you get a fish tank :)

u should talk it over with yur parents. it always works for me. I told my mom if i got a 55 she could fill up the 10 with neon tetras bcuz she loves them. maybe try to make a deal

The way I always got new tanks was getting good grades in school and did chores round the house (which you might already do)
simply go to your parents and say:

" Mom I get good grades in school so why dont I be rewarded with a brand new tank?" and then do the :fun: face

And if that doesnt work out just try to reason with them, as already told by inchworm.

i noticed in your profile that your 5g is a hex. that hints to me that your parents are probably resistant to giving up the space for a 20. if that's the case, i suggest you look around your room and see what you could clear out or move over. its amazing the amount of space you can create by simply rearranging your furniture. don't try and convince them to let you keep it on top of their nice furniture; just make space for a stand.

None of the above as far as voting goes.
Empty your 5 and get 20 as the only tank (for now)
Before you know it you will have fry and then...your parents probably would not want them to be eaten, so....
you will have two tanks..
