Fish has took a dramatic turn for the worse he just spun in spirals down the tank and is lying on the bottom. i cant bear to see him like this. i dont have clove oil nor do i have it in me to do the haed chop way. i just cant.
what other options are there please

*cries*

:-(

I'm really sorry Spishkey.... :(

I'm not sure I have an answer for you. Clove oil is really the best method......

iced water, just make sure it has been in the freezer until top just freezes over then break leaving the ice on the top. I think this is the second best option.

gonna have to wait until my fella comes home and kids are in bed. i just cant do it myself. he's lying there looking at me.
fella will have to do it

:-(

If it helps, the way I do it is to think like it just has to be done, and the sooner the better. It wasn't nice when I did it to my cory because he was an adorable character but I just did it. Bit sad at first but think of it as you hurrying up the inevitable and removing the pain.

Ive heard if not clove oil you can use vodka a cup of vodka and then put your betta in it but to be honest I think it would be far less traumatic if you popped him in and then left the room come back in 10 mins that way you wont know how he passed if you watch and you do see anything that resembles *pain* it will be more traumatic.
but to be honest clove oil is ideal

about 20 drops of clove oil in a small cup, put betta in and he will quitely go to sleep. then I remove the betta and as quickly as possible take off the head with a sharp kitchen knife to make sure the betta is dead. if you dont do that there is the possibilty that the betta could wake up and then die slowly. the betta is in no pain when you do this and will never know what is happening.

Hi Spishkey,
I think what your going through is harsh. Check his skin tone to see if its normal

Please please don't use iced water this is just cruel as your betta will not die right away before he dies he will get to feel the pain of every thing freezing and just think how much it hurts when you get cold fingers when touchin ice cubes for too long...please try a different method if you can. I have heard of Vodka working or its full on squish but not freezing :(

before I came to fish forums when I was very new to fish I did the freezing method because I did not know any better. the fish freaks out, swims in panic and will jump as high as they can to get out of the water. it is NOT a quick or painless death.

Its an unfortunate part of the hobby, but one that is essential :( I ask myself, how would i want it done to me? Quickly  So i go for the short, sharp squish. Its instant.

I agree with bronze and I have also heard that ice water is not the most humane way of doing it its usually put in this order (according to a site I stumbled on a few months ago when my Gem was very ill)

Clove oil
Squish / cut as bronze suggests
Vodka
Over dose of anesthetic
Alka Seltzer
Ice water

This site is very honest about the pro's and cons : http://www.ratemyfishtank.com/articles/81

Spish, can you get your fella to call in at a pharmacy on his way home? Or maybe a neighbour has clove oil... you can use it for toothache so a lot of people have it in a first aid box. it's really the best way. Mix it in some water first, then pop him in and cover the container over to make it dark. Then make yourself do something else for at least 10 minutes, don't stand and watch like I have done in the past - it is heartbreaking. When you get back he should be asleep if not dead. Make sure he is definitely not gonna wake up, then add a splash of vodka - this will ensure he dies in his sleep. Then go and have a vodka for yourslef and a cry. It's a horrible thing to have to do and just as bad in my opinion as having a beloved cat or dog put to sleep. :(
