My betta Happy is not ok.... I have been trying to treat him for fin rot and it hasn't gone away... He looks bad today and he is just floating at the top of the tank and he won't eat (which is not like him). I changed his water and put some salt and a little melafix in with him but he is not doing much better... I am worried.. any advice? :-(

If the fin rot is getting severe, I would treat him with an antibiotic like tetracycline. And keep the water super clean and salted. I hope he pulls through!

Some bettas do not react well to Melafix; has this been the treatment all along? Though MelaFix and BettaFix have the same active ingredient, Melafix is a 1.0% concentration and BettaFix is only a .2% concentration. You can dilute it if desired (I can send you the equation/instructions for it), but I agree with lisie; an actual anti-biotic would be the best route right now - preferably tetracyclene. It sounds like the infection goes beyond just the fins.
Just for some more info... Water stats? Temp? Progression of disease? Treatments tried so far? Water additives?

he has had the fin rot for about 3 months now... it has been better than it is now just the last week it has gotten really bad. he is in a 2.5 gal with no filter. I use stress coat and a pH balancer to keep the ph at 7.0. he is at about 70o F most of the time but there is no heater in there so sometimes he gets cold. He was in a 10 gal with other fish but he didn't do well so I moved him to his own smaller tank. I won't have money for 2 days so i will have to wait on the antibiotic til then... Poor Happy! :-(

Oh and his tummy seems kindof big and he doesnt seem to be swiming very well he just sits still at the top of the tank...

How often do you do WC's? I'm thinking the rot's persistance could be due to a combination of cold water and possibly water quality issues. Also... please do not use pH adjusting products in the future, especially if you water has a low buffering capacity. They can create deadly fluctuations in pH that can lead to unhealthy fish - perhaps another problem here. I have over 30 bettas who are living long, healthy, productive lives... in a pH of 8.2! My eldest was 5 years old and never showed any signs of stress from the pH, and I've heard the same from many other people with overly acid and overly base water. They are adaptable fish, and it is safer to just get them used to your own water than tamper with it; a consistently inappropriate pH is healthier for them than a potentially fluctuating pH.
If your tank is 2.5g, it should be safe to heat, and with fin rot and other illnesses, warmer is generally better. 70 is below safe and much below ideal; bettas survive in temps between 72 and 84 and prefer somewhere in the 76 to 82 range. If he survives long enough to get meds, consider buying a junior heater as well - you can get 'em at WalMart for about 9 bucks.

now his tummy is all fat and he is floating on his side and not swiming well... I gave him Erythromycin for 3 days as per the lable.. and put a heater in his tank and i am doing 50% water changes everyother day.. he was better for a few days now he is bad again... I don't know what to do... :-(

If he's floating on his side up at the top and can't swim well, he's constipated. What do you feed him, and what's the tank temperature at? Constipation is usually due to feeding problems or being in too cold of a temperature. Fast him, try to get him to eat a cooked deshelled pea, and if he doesn't improve within a couple days, give him an Epsom salt bath once or twice a day (1 tablespoon/gallon for 15-20 minutes) until he's better. Also make sure his water is warm enough (78-80 degrees F).

ok... I gave him some pea and the temp is at about 75oF... also when he goes to the bottom of the tank he pops back up really fast... poor baby!

sorry might have been said dont have time to read all posts, is the water level lower, I read temp is ok and water is nice and clean. My old red fish is very sluggish and floaty but I think that is age and he also is a vt so I think his tail isnt helping his bouyancy..tlc I think that is what I am doing..
