So, 7 a.m. here. Waking up. I head over to turn on the LED lights for Fez, my betta. Comes out of his pyramid, stares right at me, YAWNS, then heads back to the pyramid. Turned the lights off, I think the dude just wants to snooze this Monday a.m.

Is that a thing? Can bettas yawn?

Here he is hitting the snooze button:

Fish do yawn. I heard that it is a way for them to flush their gills. I guess it makes sense. When we yawn we take in and exhale oxygen. I’ve seen my goldfish and my betta yawn.

All fish, birds and animals yawn when tired. Dogs can be made to yawn on queue. They see us yawn and they yawn. It's a fun party trick.
