How much pain fish can physically feel and whether or not they can suffer is up for debate, but since there is evidence that at least some species do feel pain, I think it's far more humane to just assume they are capable of suffering and take the necessary precautions than assume they can't just because it's easier. I don't think any of us here would flush an ill fish as a method of euthanasia; we put them in clove oil or destroy the brain. In the same way I believe it is wrong to use too large a feeder for a predatory fish so that the feeder doesn't die within minutes of being attacked... maybe the feeder isn't in pain... but then again, maybe it is. Without knowing a definite answer on that one, better safe than sorry, I say.
