I got a 40 gallon for my birthday at the end of January, & I need something interesting & something to fill out the top half. It is 36"L, 12.5"W, & 21"T.

I want something friendly, maybe something a bit larger. The only fish at the top are my killies, anyone have any suggestions? Do I have enough room for an upside down catfish? I'm just not sure what to add... I want a gourami at some point but I would like to add it last because the last one I had hated any new fish I introduced to the tank.

Any suggestions?

I would say balas as they are pretty, active, and exciting to watch. However, your tank is slightly to small, but you could get away with it if you could transfer them to someone who has a bigger tank when they get to big

Balas are a no-no for any fish keeper without a 6' tank available ;)

Pearl gouramis get about 4" long, hang out at the top and are pretty peaceful when compared to their close cousin the blue gourami :) You will rarely see an upside down cat, as they usually skim the surface of the water at night, and hide under various decorations by day, but you can probably fit one in that tank if you really wanted to :)

Your bad experience with gouramies before was probably due to the spcies you chose. I too will have to suggest a pearl gourami. However, there's also thick-lipped, banded, dwarf and honey gouramies - all of which will spend most of their time in the upper water layers. Thick-lipped gouramies get to 3", banded to 4", dwarf to 2" and honeys 1.5-2". None of these are overly-aggressive or even particularly territorial and should not react negatively to new arrivals (provided they aren't more new gouramies of the same or a similar species).

Hee! That's what you recommended to me once as well! I took you up on that and now have a beautiful pair of pearls. They truly are a beautiful fish and get along well with their tankmates.

I think the gourami i had was a dwarf, he was orange w/ a little blue/green on his fins. A pearl sounds nice though :)

I have had an ud cat before, but unfortunately it was the not so peaceful kind that eats fish... He was lots of fun to watch, thats why I was kinda thinking of him.

& also I did have 4 neons, but 3 of them died off recently. I'm battling a bacterial infection, so I won't be getting any more fish too soon, no harm in planning & getting ideas though I suppose. I'll be stocking them back up once I make sure it's safe
