I have a 42 gallon hex, it's been up & running since May so I'll say it's pretty established. Right now it houses
a para plec
a spiny eel~4"
a handful of kuhlies
a small group of red tailed zebra loaches

So basically...it's an empty tank when you look in it, to find any fish you have to peek under/around the rocks (accept for the eel,he's always nosing around  )

So....I need some top dwellers, I've been contemplating on some for a few months now and I really can't find anything I'd like...

I don't want anything TOO common,or too aggressive because of my eel...I'd die if anything hurt him. Although he's got quite a strike and could probably hold his own.

Also....I don't want anything that, hmmm, errr how to put this....swims around carting their poop with them. There's nothing grosser in the world than looking in a tank and seeing crap hanging from a fish (IMO)

I ALMOST got some rams the other day but they had the "poo" problem I just mentioned (glad I saw that before I got them home)

So....any suggestions will be considered and appreciated! Put your thinking caps on!

Something that will do well without much back & forth swimming space and prefers a deeper water, doesn't poop like a guppy, not too common and not very aggressive (a little aggro is ok) :D

well everything has to go sometime

I was thinking.. maybe some uhh.. Maybe a Angel Fish?
i don't know if that would work or not just a suggestion

Oh yeah...I should add that ....I really don't like angels, they're too common and boring

only my opinion, they're really lovely fish though, just not my keg of beer

*dives under the table to avoid the angel lovers*

I'd suggest angelfish also. They like a tall aquarium and unfortunately most fish don't. I would think you could keep three in there easily. Their tall and graceful flowing bodies would look lovely in a hex.

BEWARE though of a hex tank. It is deceptive. The one inch of fish per gallon rule does not work because there is much less surface space in a hex tank than a rectangular tank

Your right about that! I'm aware of how very little space it has, I actually hate the tank....I loved the shape when I first got it but I soon realized how useless it was  I ended up moving all of my fish to bigger tanks and there sits the hex....empty :X

Same story for me. I got this hex thinking how cool it looked before I knew anything about fish keeping. It currently houses way too many fish but I will be moving the snail and pleco to my 55 gal when ready and then I'll have to see about the goldfish. There will still be too many in there but I don't know if I can bear to part with any of them. I stuck a huge filter in there and it definitely helped so maybe without the snail and pleco (both of which produce just as much waste as the goldfish) I'll be ok.

I love my hex tanks!!! I have 3 of them..............
What about a couple of Honey Gouramis and a Gold and a Pearl Gourami. I have them in my 35 gallon hex tank and they don't make a mess. I RARELY ever see anything hanging off them!!! I love the combination of the 3 different types of Gouramis and they all get along well and look Beautiful together. It is a very peaceful tank.

Gouramis are nice, I had some when I first set up the hex and they did well, but I brought them back to my lfs because the became obnoxious ( )

I was hoping for something a little more rare, but I'll probably end up with gouramis again :dunno:

Wuv if you want different why not try Butterfly fish or hachets. As I think about it glass cats would be nice also.

African butter fly fish are pretty aggresive but your right thety aren't too common. They can however be hard to see some times because they do float right at the surface.

Glass cats are awesome! I might have to peek at them again the next time I'm at my lfs. They always have butterflies in stock, I've really always wanted one but my friend who works at my lfs always says "ehhh, you don't want those, they jump and they're boring" , Maybe I'll rebel and get one anyway :p

What about a butterfly fish and a few glass cats? :hyper:

Wuv,
You're right about Gouramis being obnoxious sometimes. Mine can be real pains in the necks at times. Real attitude problems at times!!! What did your's do to be obnoxious

The red ones were always cornering my poor eel when he was new so they went back first. Then the blues were always fighting with the fronts (bad mix but I had to keep the fronts in there until I got the 120) and needless to say...the fronts were winning and the gouramis were getting hurt but never backing down and just swimming away. So I moved them to my 29 where they decided it was fun to chase kuhlis so...they went back too . I had them for a few months and liked them but they just didn't know when to quit if ya know what I mean ;)
