Yesterday i snuck up to my tank to catch a glimpse of my beloved, 7 year old pleco because i usually don't see him because of his timid nature. i was lucky to see him because a large white clump had grown on the side of his face!! I don't know if its fungus or what, but the previous night he looked just fine... i treated with external parasite remover and took out my live plants to save them from the treatment, and removed my filter cartridge because the treatment won't function with the filter in. i will put it back tommarrow morning but i need help!!! please!!!

you've completely removed you filter? thats never a good thing to do as thats where all the bacs live to break down the ammonia and with a plec theres going to be loads over night.

can you get a picture at all? does it look fluffy?

any new additions? fish or plants?

i put the filter back in. i cant take a picture because he scares VERY easy. i couldnt tell if it was fluffy as i only got about a 20 second look at it. I recently added 2 new plants and 1 fish.

Start with a separate tank for treatment, and get a picture. It could be columnaris, it could be a heater burn, or something completely different, can't say without a picture.

its impossible to remove him from the tank, one wrong move and i will send him into his rock (wich he rarley comes out of anyway) and i dont want to pull him off the rock because that will surley hurt him. he is always on the opposite side of the tank from the heater. i will try to get up a pic soon

I have yet to find a fish that is impossible to remove from a tank, remove him rock & all. Unless you are watching the tank 24/7 you don't know if he's going near the heater or not.

What that probably said was to remove the carbon filter - you can probably safely leave sponges and biomedia in there. I say probably, because I haven't read the actual instructions.

A carbon filter's main function is to remove heavy metals from the water. Most dechlorinators do this anyway. Most medications are based on heavy metals, so a carbon filter would remove this ingredient before it had a chance to be effective. After a few weeks, the carbon becomes saturated, and cannot absorb any more, which is why the manufacturers tell you to change it frequently.

The common advice on this forum is not to bother using a carbon filter until you need to remove medications after it has run its course, therefore keep one in the cupboard, but not in the filter.

I hope this helps.

I have a carbon filter. i removed it today to treat with fungus cure. I change my filter monthly. But anyway, could it just be discoloration? he is ALWAYS in the dark underneath his rock....

i don't have another tank for him. you might be right because i don't watch the tank every single minute of my days. but with his personality it might be unlikley

Why did you treat what sounds like a bacterial infection or a fungus with external parasite remover? You should never add any medicine that is not specific to the problem at hand. You should determine what this is first, then treat. Also, if you have trouble getting him off the rock with a net, simply reach in and grasp him with your thumb on one side and your index finger on the other just behind his pectoral fins. He should come right off.

I am always so scared i will hurt him. The treatment i used wouldn't have had time to get in affect because i read a comment further up about my filter and put my cartridge in right away. I treated it 1. because i added a new fish and it says it's safe. (i should have mentioned that earlier but i was too lazy) but now i have fungus remover and i havn't treated it yet.... although i think i am.
