ok this is gonna be a long question so i apologize. I am currently in hospital and so i havent been able to see anyone about this problem. However i have utterly RANSACKED the internet, library and i have called specialists many times about it. There is nothing (that i can find) about this on the internet NOTHING atall like it. The many different specialist are confused too and dont know. You lot are my last result!!! Ok, so the fish go really thin loose there appetite swim very slowly and rock. Them after about 2 or 3 days they sink to the bottom of the tank and only hang about there, still for maybe about 30mins. Then they go onto there sides and they then struggle around, trying to get back upright by swimming in spirals around the tank. Eventually after another 30mins or so they almost 'give in' and they then end up on there side in a sharp 'v' shape shuffling around the floor of the tank. The awful thing is that this stage has before gone on from between overnight - 2days! Before they finally get still, even then they are still alive but still and breathing heavily on there side for atleast a few hour before they atlast die, poor things. However i have also had different things happen but they still die in a similar sort of way. The other way seemed to happen with only my platys. Its starts off the same way they tend to stay stationary mainly and dont eat, but instead of going matchstick thin they bloat out like balloon mollys. Then they sink to the bottom but unlike the other 'way' they dont struggle they immediatly go onto there side and shuffle about the bottom slowly, then, quicker than the other way they stay still but breathe heavily. And again unlike the other way they die, but alot quicker than the other way. But when they are dead all there scales stick out really spikey and they stay massive like they are gonna pop. But with the other way the dead fish look no different, infact if they werent so thin i would say it was a healthy fish. The specialists say that the second way sounds like dropsy, which i agreed with, so they gave me some meds and it hasnt done anything. I am flipping out.

Here is some of the important information. I have a 65litre tropical freshwater fish tank, with the correct equiptment, a filter and heater. All water qualities are better than perfect - i have my own kit and i have tried 7 different types of kits and had several specialists test the water too. Every time the same, perfect. These are the fish i had - 8 platys, 10 guppies, 2 honey gourami, and 2 agazizzi cory cats. 22 fish. Now i have only guppy and 1 cory left. ↲
Here is a really interesting thing. Every time i change the water atleast one fish died and every time i feed them the symptom move forward and sometimes a fish dies. HELP ME! i cant bare hearing about my pets suffering and dying like this! I really need help. Some help, any help.↲
Ask me as many questions as you like. JUST PLZ HELP. THANKS x
my tank has been set up for approaching a year now. I have never had any problems. Oh and another thing the other of the two agazizzi cory died differently. In a really astonishing way. It suddenly rushed to the water line they flopped onto its side ontop of my filter. It just gasped for hours then fell to the bottom and here's the horrible bit. On either side of its head - like near where our temples would be - there was like a splintered crack which was blood red like she was actually bleeding.↲
Although this particular tank has only been set up a year i have had many tropical fish tanks before and the rest of my family are just as experienced as me if not more so. I no everyone probably says this, but, i am obsessed with fish keeping, infact i over care my fish and i am always going in a flap about the tinyest things. I care for my fish so much bodi crushes me to see them in this state, as i have never really had any issues over all these years of fish keeping.

My ph levels are all excellent and my temperature is at 26oC. Everything i have in this tank is used in all my other tanks and its the same with the type of fish. Never had any issues. I have already been down all these roads and its always a dead end. NOTHING LINKS IN!!! grrrrr!!! Its so annoying and upsetting.

Sorry for the epic topic!!

Hi and welcome to the forum :good:
sorry to hear your crappy news with your fish!
it does sound like dropsy with the fish that have pine cone scales sticking out and i think its very difficult to treat once the fish get to that stage. maybe fish TB for the others...!
what are the results for the water tests ie ammonia, nitrite, nitrate etc?
what is your regular maintenance for the tank? water changes etc
there is an emergency section on the forum and someone called Wilder is very very good with fish illness and diagnostics etc so mybe copy and paste the topic in there for her to read, im sure she will get back to you and try to get to the bottom of this horrible situation.
all the best.

Yeah just to add an other recomendation for Wilder in the emergency section, she is an absolute saint!

I had a similar sounding crisis with one of my tanks a few days ago. When I tested my water the pH, ammonia and nitrites were all fine but half the fish in the tank were laying on their side on the bottom. The rest were not perky and active as they usually are. Being totally clueless, I looked at everything that had changed recently. One thing I noted was that I had changed food. I feed all of my tanks the same thing and all others were doing fine. I switched the food back to the former food and did a 50% water change on the tank because that can never hurt and may help. I ended up losing the fish that were in trouble but the rest of the tank bounced back and those fish all seem well now. I still do not know what the problem was but am happy that all of my fish have fully recovered during the last week.

Always interesting to read a good thought from OM47.. plus, OM, should she just copy or can you as a mod do a copy over to Wilder in Emergencies? Seems like that might be good too.

might be interesting to do tests on your tap water too, since things occur after a water change, although you could be overstressing the fish, what de-chlorinator do you add, are you adding the right amount? check the dosage on the bottle, cos this seems like chlorine poisening, di

thank you for all suggestions so far. I have done another bunch of research since i posted and i think 'mattlee' is right. I really think it is fish tb. Everything seems to link in, its the only disese that makes sense.↲
I know everything i have looked at has so far has pretty much said that it is incurable. My last two fish arent looking good and i am guessing they will die soon. I therefore have some questions.↲
Firstly once my fish have died and my tank is empty, what do i need to do so that i can get it up and running again?↲
again, the information i have says that from now onward in order to use the tank again i have to basically start over, as if i have just bought a new tank and i need to set it up. i am more than willing to do that but i need a better 'description' as to how to start over. I myself and my dad have a very very bad immune system because of on going illnesses so how to i clear my tank out and be as little involved as possible - because humans can catch fish tb and i am extremely serceptable to illnesses.↲
My questions are - do i have to throw out everything in my tank? e.g. plants, stones, wood and my substrate? Or is there something i can do to them to make them completely tb free and re-usable?

also will i have to get a brand new filter and heater? To be on the safe side or is there a sure far way to make them safe and completely free of fish tb?↲
Another thing, i am presuming that i will need to get rid of my gravel substrate. To be honest i will probably change it anyway. But has anyone got any tips on how to remove the gravel with minimum use of my hands as possible? SORRY I JUST NEED TO BE REALLY CAUTIOUS'

thanks but for some reason my accoutn wont let me post or create a topic on that forum. Any ideas why?
could it be to do with the fact i am a newbie?

The reason that many new people have trouble with posting is not because they are new here. The thing that keeps you from posting in most parts of the forum is that you have not "validated" your account. To validate an account, you follow the link that you got in an e-mail when you first registered. Once you have done that, you should be able to post anywhere in the regular parts of the forum that you can see. (There are places that are for the MODs to talk to each other that most people don't see at all.)
If you wish I can move this thread to the emergencies section, but if you have not yet validated your account you won't be able to post there.
