I Hate Platys

Is it common to have a tank of platys breed out of control? I have 4 tanks with platys now. The only time any fry survived was when I put the mother in an empty 10 gallon, and took her out after she had the fry. No fry have ever survived long enough for me to even notice them in my other tanks. I assume they are eaten by the parents and other fish in the tank. Also, i don't have any of the dense, fine leaved plants that fry seem to have more success hiding in.

I was about to recomment platys to a friend who is starting fishkeeping - but I don't want them to have a population explosion!

I am wondering the answer to the what sex is the bully platty, if it's a girl and she is defending her young can you blame her, and as far as fry go my neons and other platies make quick work of them

:( I'm having the opposite problem. I've just set up a new tank and have 5 male guppies and 5 assorted colour platys. The guppies are attacking the platys every time they dare to swim around the tank. The poor things spend the whole time hiding behind a big rock. They even attack them at feed time and the platys just go back behind the rock again and don't eat. My other half doesn't care and just says 'tough, let them get on with it', he won't let me give them away. I wish him and the guppies would go, it's upsetting me.
