Fish Herder
It also depends on the pecking order withing the tank. I have a red tomato clown in with a yellow tail and a 3 stripe damsel. The tomato clown is very much the boss and what he says goes, he keeps all the other fish in check and makes sure the pecking order is maintained. If any other fish are being too bosy he just goes over and gives them a good peck! its quite funny to watch. Hes the balance in the tank and if he was not there, I'm sure the yellow tail would be a bit out of control. They all live together in a 25g happily , everyone has their own spot and the large amount of rock work means if anyone is having a strop its easy to get away and hide until things calm down.
I like my damsels they add alot of colour and interest to the tank, they are cheap, eat pretty much anything you throw at them, and are supper hardy. So in that way they are a good first fish but only with the right tank mates. They are classed as semi agressive and should be kept with similar labeled fish.
