I have a mature male keyhole. He had a friend when I first got him they got along. but it was another male. The smaller male died not because of my other keyhole. Well people and sites said they do best with friends. I could not find another keyhole so I got a Bolivian ram. She is small 1.5". I moved around the stuff in the tank even took things out added a new rock. Now my male is all freaked out but follows my ram when he sees her. He cornered the ram once I was so scared he would go at her. But he just kept her closed in. He has Gone to nip the ram a few times. BUT the Ram will look For the keyhole as if to mess with him. The ram is pretty tough.

I'm starting to think my keyhole does not want a friend. I wanted to get him a female but no one can order keyholes and if they do get them they only get 2 so chances of getting a female are low.

So the light is off in the tank. Things are all moved around. Do you think they will work something out? I have my holding tank still set up if I need to separate.

The tank is 36 gal 5 rasboras a clown pleco and BN pleco the keyhole and that's it. Now I have a little ram. I have lots of hide outs too. I'm thinking of adding another ram to the mix to even it out so the 2 are not picking on just each other.

How do your cichlids treat new fish?

I'm going rearrange the tank some more tomorrow with more rocks and take out this fake log that's ugly and cheap. That should help.

He's just checking out the intruder, so long as she doesnt make a play for his special spot, I doubt very much they will clash, if anything it will be the ram that has a go at the keyhole.

You could add another ram, another female if possible, because if you got a male and they paired off, they would stress out the keyhole.

I am going to keep a look out for another ram but I always end up with 2 males. So I have to be more careful with picking. Yes my little ram is not a push over but the keyhole keeps her in check.

have a look around and try and find a female keyhole, or else, buy a small group of little keyholes, and then wait 4 females to become aparent, and then give the rest back?

They are getting along great I'm not going to add any other fish they all are pretty happy. I don't want any drama.
