Recently I posted a thread desperate to know what was wrong with my platy. I thought she was preg...but after a while she deteriorated and died :( I put it down to an internal infection. It apears in the days leading up to her passing she had babies! This is the 2nd platy that has done this... I looked in my planted tank today and theres 3-4 fry swimming around.

I dont know what to do now! I really should do a water change but i dont want to stress them. I have to pull out a plant thats dead but should i put the in a breeders box to contain them?? They are the only fish in the tnak but the water really needs changing. I dont have baby food either :( How do i get them to eat??

Is it common for the mums to die after birth?

If the babys are in there on their own, no need to put them in a breeder, and only additional precaution to take when doing your water change is not to suck them up when you syphon out..... As for first foods, take your normal flakes and roll this into a fine powder (with rolling pin) on breadboard, until you can get baby food for live bearers (I think tetramin no.2)

About the mothers, yes it is exhausting for them to deliver between 20 and 45 fry and also at the same time they get increased attentions from the males constantly chasing them around.....not uncommon for them to die from exhaustion after delivey.

im nearlly at the bottom of my flake container so theres powder flakes there already. Theres also plants across the top of the water...will they see the food through it? I removed the dead plant and did a carefull gravel vac to get up all the dead gunk and did a 20% water change. Made sure the water was 26deg before putting it back in. They are very different sizes...some are tiny tiny and some are bigger...

They will find plenty of the powder that you put in. Any that they miss, within reason, in a well planted tank, will go to feed the plants. Good luck with them.

UPDATE: its been just over a week and there is about four to six fry that i can count. Swimming around happyly. They are getting more confident every day. Im feeding them a crushed up mix of baby krill, baby brine, algea mix, herring and a stack of vitamins and other fish nutrietion stuff. Its called Spectrum Grow - By New Life (hormone free, growth enhancing .5mm sinking pellets)

Unsure of how many are in the planted tank but on a good day i can count up to six. Some are large and some are still tiny.

If you can count six of 'em. believe me there are around 9 to 11 of them.....Yea... once they start getting confident & swim around in the open, your next brood will be a bit bigger as the parents get used to the idea that there are fry swimming around amoungst them. The only critical period then would be the first 4 -5 hours.... Those newborns that can survive that will be ok.

Sounds like you are well on your way to being able to enjoy watching them mature EY. Make sure that you keep their water clean while they are growing up and it should go well. As Ludwig said, if you can see 6 there are likely 9 or more. In addition to lots of good food, the next most important thing to get good fry growth is lots of water changes. Even if you don't see anything wrong with the water parameters, do a 30% every week anyway. From what I have read, fry release hormones into the water that can inhibit the development of the others. Trouble is that in a closed environment like an aquarium the stuff builds up and inhibits all the fry.

Yeah she was in my communal tank with other fish. i moved her after I did a water change into my planted tank because she went into labour and wouldnt eat or anything. She seemed fine in the planted tank but went more and more down hill as days went by. One day she would peck at food and then the next she wouldnt touch it.

The fry seem to be doing fine in the planted tank. They swim through the plants. I feed them twice a day a mixture i got from my lfs called Grow. Its what they feed their fish. They seem to be doing well. *crosses fingers* Some seem far more developed than the others. Some are quite large and some are still quite small.

as for live plants i find them a no no

When did Live Plants become a " No No"? They are good for the fish tanka nd the fish. The use up some of the harmful Nitrates ( possibly Nitrites and Ammonia, not sure ont hat one). How do you think fish make it out in the wild? I would think something else in your tank is killing those fish instead of plants.

hi, congratulations on your fry, platys where the first-infcat only fish i have bred and i was so excited when the mum went into labour that i stayed up all night with here, watching, i have had the same thing happen,2-3 days later the mum has died, i dont know why, answers may lie with what others have siad, keep the water extrmely clean with water changes and feed them on high protien foods :)

congratulations :)

sorry also mollys and guppys cope better with labour and very rare they die ive had lots of guppys and mollys and lost 1 guppy through labour thats it they are pitty good fish to breed .im also going to try to breed egg layers so thats a challenge in itself as egg layers are harder to sex so its basic guess work and luck .speek soon chris and marie

40000000 fry running around? Wow, how long did it take you to count them all. Next time, put water in the tank you may find that they swim around instead of running. Swimming is much better for all cardio :) :) :)

Of course i am only having a laugh :)
