I feel horible

I accidentally squished a fry the same way once, and I felt just awful. :( So, I know exactly how you feel. Accidents happen, though. Don't beat youself up over it.

Sorry R.I.P.

When you freeze a fish it just slows down the bodily functions of the fish. Just the fish would if it was going into hibernation (I realize that normally tropical fish don't hibernate but...same idea). The fish dies painlessly. If you were to watch the fish while you were freezing it you would notice that it will swim around for a while and then gradually get slower and slower until it just sits at the bottom of the cup then it will painlessly end its life. That is always how I euthanize my fish. I do not agree with just pulling the fish out of the water, flushing it while it is still alive (although I might do that if the fish is practically dead and I don't want to bother with putting it in the freezer). If I was unable to use the freezer or if someone convinced me that freezing fish is imhumane I might consider making them into disection projects and cutting off their heads or something like that.... although I think that I guppy would be pretty hard to disect.

The only fish that I have had to euthanize were some that were on their deathbeds anyway with some sort of disease that I could not find a cure for. The rest of my fish have dead in their tanks. Hope nobody takes offence to this!!

Actually long before the fish dies ice crystals form in the fishes blood which tear and rip their way through the fishes arteries and internal organs so the fish actually dies from massive internal hemorage while it sleeps.

This subject has been researched to death and all experts agree that the most humane methods of euthanasia are to use a vetinary anesthetic such as MS-222 or clove oil to put the fish into a coma and eventual death or if this method is not available to you then to either remove the fishes head in one motion with a sharp knife or destroy the fishes brain with a heavy blunt object such as a rolling pin.

Good gravy, what a bump!~!

In my opinion, even clove oil has GOT to hurt for a few seconds, and I know it's been tested repeatedly so I'm not trying to argue with the masses, but have you ever put clove oil in your mouth (anyone)? On unprotected membrane? Yowza, it's not good but it DOES numb quickly, but it burns like hell.

I wouldnt feel bad if i were you, you did the best you could.
In future, just let nature do its thing, i learned the hard way.

i catch my fry with a cup, its quite fun trying to get a hold of them, the siphoning way seems a good idea, its quick and would be faster, but sorry about the loss everyone makes mistakes
