So I was doing a water change in my tank so I could add my meds and low and behold I found a tiny fry hiding in my water sprite! So I caught the little guy and put it in my breeders net where I have 7 other fry.
I noticed the older fry seemed to be nipping at the newest fry so I tried to catch him with my net but ended up crushing him.... Hes still alive though! But it looks like his insides are now on the outside, like his belly looks big...
Is there anything I can do for him? Hes in a net at the moment just kinda sitting there.
Has anyone else done something like this? I feel so horrible, I didnt mean to do it :-(

that sucks. ill probably end up doing that too sometime here. i just got my first batch of fry ever this week.

I don't want to sound mean but if he looks that bad I'd put it to rest. It sounds gruesome but you can take a brick or rock or something and hit the fry with it make sure you get it the first try  . He is probably just gonna suffer till he dies anyways I think a quick and easy death is best for him. :-(

I have learned my lesson never to touch fri with a net until 2 months old at least- they just seem to die. I don't think you can really do anything for the little guy- I usually feed the suffering fry to the adult fish.

Oh and I would not add meds to the tank with fri in it-(remove the fri if possible). I did this once with 5 month old fri -I thought they would be ok since they were getting big- but I ended up loosing all 18 of them. (the med I added was Myacin.

My little fry died a little while ago :-( RIP little one :rip:

With adding meds to the tank I dont have a choice. My one guppy has internal parasites and I have no where to put the fry while I medicate.... But thanks for the suggestion :)

I also want to add I think this fry was sick anyways. When he died took him out and was looking at him and he was not fully formed.... Like it appears he was missing his little fins on the side.....

But really though, please tell me im not the only one who has killed a fry accidently?? I feel really bad guys..... :byebye:

Just as a little side note - a humane way of euthanising fish is putting them (and their water) in a plastic baggie (or cup, or whatever) in the freezer. Some people also put bakingsoda in the water to euthanize fish (I think I removes the oxygen?)

So sorry to hear about your little guy Mariah :(

I accidently squashed a fry in my tank while gravel vaccing once and felt awful for days :-(

NEVER FREEZE FISH!!! Please read pinned topics on euthanising in the emergency section

im sorry to hear that...

on a side note, to the one that said they never use a net on fry til 2 months old - i use a net that is normally used for feeding brine shrimp which is very, very soft/fine and have had absolutely no deaths - using a larger, coarser net could cause issues for sure

um... that would be a slow death. This should help

When you freeze a fish it just slows down the bodily functions of the fish. Just the fish would if it was going into hibernation (I realize that normally tropical fish don't hibernate but...same idea). The fish dies painlessly. If you were to watch the fish while you were freezing it you would notice that it will swim around for a while and then gradually get slower and slower until it just sits at the bottom of the cup then it will painlessly end its life. That is always how I euthanize my fish. I do not agree with just pulling the fish out of the water, flushing it while it is still alive (although I might do that if the fish is practically dead and I don't want to bother with putting it in the freezer). If I was unable to use the freezer or if someone convinced me that freezing fish is imhumane I might consider making them into disection projects and cutting off their heads or something like that.... although I think that I guppy would be pretty hard to disect.

The only fish that I have had to euthanize were some that were on their deathbeds anyway with some sort of disease that I could not find a cure for. The rest of my fish have dead in their tanks. Hope nobody takes offence to this!!

Hi Mariah :)

Please don't feel bad about your lost fry. :byebye:

Fry are tiny and delicate and are ever so easy to injure or kill. This is why fish produce so many. In their natural environment even more are lost to predators and the dangers of the open water. Instead, think of the ones you will save and the good life you will provide for them in your tank.

i catch my fry with a deep spoon sort of thing i found in my kitchen.i have also caught them with a net before and it was fine but i wouldnt want to take the risk again.

I syphon my fry out with a hose :p Works wonders, it's like a very quick waterslide, and they don't seem to mind too much.

Really sorry to head about your fry though Mariah =(

About the euthanising, I agree with reading through the pinned topic about it first. I'll stick with clove oil myself, it just seems least painful.

People have very different opinions on whether freezing is a painless death or not. Personally I'd rather not be frozen to death.

If you were to watch the fish while you were freezing it you would notice that it will swim around for a while and then gradually get slower and slower until it just sits at the bottom of the cup then it will painlessly end its life.

If I was in a very cold place, I'd probably keep walking around too, and then get slower because it's getting too cold, untill at the end I have to lay down and die ... though really, I can't say that it will be painless. It seems like an absolutely horrible way to go to me.

Fry are so teeny tiny and in nature so few out of a given batch survive... I really wouldn't feel bad about it. It is a horrible thing to happen, but you were trying your best for him, and he probablly did better than he would do in the wild.

As a side note, rather than start a discussion on freezing fish, pls refer to the pinned topic as noted earlier. It was always seen in the past as being the kindest way, but now the lmajority of scientific opinion would be that it is likely to cause much suffering and pain & a relatively slow death.
