WHY is it that crap happens at night when you can't do anything about it???!!!!

As some may recall, I am getting a new betta tomorrow (Spike). Had his 3 gal. Eclipse all set up for him and when I checked it this evening I found it had developed a leak!!! Grrrrrrr.................. Granted, I have had it for YEARS, but still....

Fortunately, I have a 2 gal. drum bowl that Spike will have to live in till I make other arrangements. It's even big enough for the 25 watt heater to fit in, so that's good, and I have an LED light to go over the top.

In all the years I have been keeping fish, ONLY the acrylic tanks have ever given me any grief. That's why despite the extra weight, I really, REALLY prefer glass!!!

Ok - rant over (for now).

Oops

Even glass ones wear out. My brother-in-law had a 6' Discus tank just explode  80-90 gallons turned their lounge into a hot tub

YIKES!!!!!!

Have to admit, that's WAY worse than my deal.

Well, at least I had something on hand to house Spike in for the time being - I can be grateful for that.

this might sound stupid but I think plastic aquariums are more durable than glass aquariums

Oh lionmoon that sucks! Thats my number one fear...coming home or waking up to find my tankcracked and all over the floor and my fish either flapping around or....dead... :( Glad you had one on hand!

Gee, that sucks! Really lucky you had something lying around. I'm so lucky... I've had two tank blowouts, the first time I was standing right next to it when it cracked, and the second time it happened in the middle of the night but it was only a 1/2 gallon planted thingy, no fish in it (of course, for 1/2 gallon), only a baby snail, which survived.

What caused a tank to blow out? Arent they suppose to be strong?

Ive heard some heaters can be a culprit when not efficient or old they dont disapate heat efficiently and if one corner gets hotter than the rest it can crack

That wasn't the case here. The heater is less than 2 months old - had it in another tank and it performs flawlessly. The tank itself is/was old and, I have to admit, I was kind of expecting it. I saw it was developing small cracks here & there over the years, but nothing that went all the way through.

Pushed my luck & my luck ran out.

I'd say, someone was looking out for your new fishy- good thing it broke hours bevore u got him snd not after. I know bettafish can take in oxygen through the air too, but not sure how long! I'm sorry that this happened, but at least not lives were lost- big hugs!

when I first started fish keeping I had gotten the cheap walmart tanks, two seperate tanks blew seams and poured water all over my floor. and it just HAD to be the same month my husband was away on business and I was home alone with no car and a one year old.

Aww its typical that something like that would happen just as you were due to get Spike, you can get a nice glass tank for pretty cheap now though so hopefully you can get one sorted soon enough. ^_^

YUP - things could have been a TON worse!!!!

I'm just happy I noticed it before bedtime. I can't IMAGINE what my husband would have said if it had leaked through the living room ceiling (Spike is upstairs on the computer desk) where we had new drywall put up a couple/three years ago!!!

How much longer before Spike comes.....I'm being very patient lol

Funny you should ask - he arrived this morning. He has been acclimated and is happily exploring his 2 gal. bowl with heater, driftwood (do you people call that bogwood?), java moss, moss ball. gravel and rocks.

He is going to have to put up with the bowl for a little while - after buying him and the new food you told me to buy, Netty :shout: , I'm outta cash for the week - bummer!!!!

In any event, he is just a cute as his pic - only better!!! :)
