OK so, I have this "stuff " in my tank and I'm 50 50 on if it's Hydra or some kind of fungus maybe? It's everywhere even if I scrub it off everything I see it is still back in a few hours. I have a 20 gallon tank running at about 80 degrees with a couple Loaches, 8 guppies and a few babies, an apple snail and one dwarf gourmi, and female betta. Is this something I should be concerned about? If so what should I do? It's impossible to take a picture of cause it's so small, but it does sway with the current, it does look like a tiny tiny anemone or even tiny palm tree if that helps. The fish do eat them but not fast enough to make a difference. I have already cut back on feeding hoping that will help.

Sounds like hydra, there should be pictures of them in the common hitch hikers pinned thread. Sorry can't put a link to it now because I'm on my phone. Hydras will sting fish and can kill small fry. Over feeding is not usually a cause for hydra unless you have been giving lots of fresh water live foods like daphina or Cyclops..

I agree with it being Hydra. When you scrape them off you should gravel vac to remove them from the substrate.

I don't have a vac yet, and I don't really see them on the gravel, just on the glass marbles, but next pay day I'll certainly look into getting one, and I haven't fed any live foods yet, I've had the tank about a month, got a nice healthy looking bio wheel in the filter, and I do my weekly water changes.  Just not sure where they came from, my guess is the snail, I don't have any live plants yet (although I did have a bit of some floaty plants that came with some fish at one point) so maybe that could be it?  Currently I'm feeding a pinch of flakes in the morning, and like half an algae wafer at night. Sometimes I toss in some freeze dried shrimp as a treat, as well as some broccoli.  Thanks for the feedback, I at least feel better getting a more definite label on the stuff.  Though they don't look as big as the pictures of hydra I've seen, they just maybe haven't gotten the chance yet to grow...or perhaps those pictures are waaaaaay magnified.

As far as gravel cleaning I have done (had an early outbreak of ick, it's gone now though) without a vac what I've done is to take my gravel out and put it in a bucket and soaked it in some tank salt in hot water and just let the water run while stirring it around and letting stuff float out.  Can never get out all the rocks though so the rest I just stir up really good and let the filter run while the rest are soaking.  I've only done this twice.  I hope they will die off with less food in the tank. *fingers crossed*

Whatever they were I was able to murder them by soaking my plants and decorations in some peroxide, and now I have a vacuum so Yay!

I was told by a friend that it was a type of fungus, it doesn't seem to be a problem anymore especially after I dosed my tank with lifeguard.

it has come back several times, but after reading a bit and seeing some good pictures, it very likely is diatoms! So I guess I need some flourish or something, and maybe pick a couple days a week to have the lights in the tank off.
