Hurricane Irene

So, here in the states there is a big hurricane that's currently hitting the east coat. I'm on the outskirts of it but flooding and power outages are still expected.

So what do I do if my tank is without filter power and heat for up to 3 days? Is there anything I could do if the outage lasts for a long time?

Not much, except I'd try really hard to keep water flowing through the filter so you don't lose all your bacteria. A generator would be perfect of course, but otherwise do it by hand several times a day, running tank water over the filter media.

You will probably want to wrap the tank in blankets/quilts/whatever to keep it warm and acquire battery powered airpumps and LOTS of spare batteries. You will want to put one airstone below the media, so it encourages the water to pass through the media and one in the tank so that the surface is disturbed.

My wifes got a friend who is on holiday in Raleigh, NC and was due to be catching an american airways flight home yesterday back to the UK so not sure if the flight was cancelled or delayed, think it must of been delayed as reports here in the UK is saying all flights in and out of the east coast are suspended.

We were out on Orlando when hurricane Francis hit and our flight was delayed, we eventually got a flight 6 days later.

I was without power for about 4 days in the dead of winter, I kept my tanks covered up with blakets, and had a battery operated air pump, I didnt feed my fish at all, and kept my filter media wet, all went well thou, didnt lose any fish, so I was greatful!! I hated where I used to live, we lost power at least 2 times a month. I finally called the electric company and chewed them out (along with the help of my neighbors) , they ended up coming and repairing all the lines and cut back trees that was in the way!! Good luck and I hope nothing but the best for anyone in its path!
