Fish Crazy
Hey everyone. I have one of the weirdest looking platties in the world! A little background....I bought four platties to use in my very first fish tank and it wasnt long until I had fry. My wife and I thought this would be cool and so we started 'breeding' platties and bought them their own 55 gallon tank. It has been a while now since we have had this tank up and running and are successfully breeding fish at a rate of about one 'litter' a week of fry. The tank is doing awesome and all water parameters are right on target. This tank currently holds about 60 to 70 platties, but before you get upset, the very vast majority of them are 4 to 5 week old fry. Once they are large enough, we take them to our local LFS and either donate them or trade for food or other supplies.
Anyways, I have one platty that appears to have grown 'upside-down'. It is a full sized fish, meaning it is all grown up and we use it as breeding stock. Yesterday we noticed though that this fish is deformed and looks a lot like it has a hump on its back. Also, the 'hump' area is kind of semi-transparent as I suppose our skin would look like when we have a blister.
There is no sign of ICH, or any other diseases or parasites. The fish is swimming straight and is otherwise in good condition (no fin rot or scrapes). However, it is not as active as the other fish and I am assuming as it used to be.
Is this fish just some sort of weird occurance or is this something I should treat or even can treat? If so, is it something that can be spread through the tank? At this very second, I do not have a quarenteen tank or hospital tank (Long story short, I had one but it was vandalized), so my options are somewhat limited.
Thanks for any help and if it matters, this is a 'sunburst' platty. Oh, and the inbreeding issue is somewhat mute since like I said, we do not keep the fry.
