How To Regain My Interest?

So I'm currently in sixth form, had a busy time for the past year with a part time job, exams, college work, going out etc and I haven't given any of my 2 tanks what they deserve.

I've completely lost all interest, and it's not at all good for their welfare (I've noticed fish dying but they get eaten up and I never see them again, I feed like once a week when I remember I have to feed them-it used to be once per day).

To top it off, I'm hopefully going to uni this september and leaving both tanks for my family to look after, and I don't think they will do a particularly amazing job.

How can I regain the passion I once had for my tanks? I remember spending loads of money on them to make them look great and now all I do is feed and a waterchange every month as its such a burden.

Maybe a change around of stocking. Maybe instead of a community tank you could move on to something a little different, Maybe a cichlid tank or oddballs. Or if you have really lost interest maybe it would be best to take a break from fish keeping and come back when you have more time to spend on them.

Not being funny, but if your off to uni why not just sell up?

The fish can go to a home where they will get better care and you can get some cash for yourself.

After uni you can always start again

Get rid of them to someone who will look after them and enjoy them its not fair on the fish and if your going to uni and leaving them there is not much point in trying to enjoy them again unless you can take them with you.

But my parents really like having the tanks, so I'm not allowed to sell. And I have quite a bit of stock left, so a change of stocking isn't really ideal.

I think Ive still got:

Albino rainbow shark
2 Angel fish
2 bronze corys
1 cardinal tetra
6 Harlequin rasbora
5 rummy nosed tetra
1 bullnose plec (i think thats the name)
2 striped loaches

They have adequate filtration and movement (koralia 2, tetra ex 700 and fuwel 600lph filter box)

then my other tank has 3 black widow tetras and loads of cherry shrimp.

Hmm.

Theres quite a few fish that could do with the numbers upping. The corys, tetra and loaches all need to be in groups of 4+. If it was me i would sell up and maybe looking into keeping 1-2 bigger fish that way you dont have you worry about groups and bits.

i too give up fish keeping at 15,16 due to local girls getting beautiful and intrest in countrys civil war. soon as i settle down plus married and not allowed to have mind on my own, i started my hobby again.. almost 8,9 years now and planing on a big boys tank..


get rid of your fish and have your adventure of your life time. when you are tired come back to the hobby.

Unfortunatly I must agree with most of the people of the above, your probabaly best getting rid, but as the situation doesnt permit I would probably just try and get your parents a little bit more involved in actively looking after them.

If you can just get them to drop a pinch of flakes in once a day if you can, just say as you pass before they go off to work just drop a pinch in that way they will get into the routine. Then I would try and show them next time that changing the water once in a while aint so hard, just a easy little vac on the gravel to keep things cushty.

Basically trick them into looking after them in a way lol this way they are going to want to look after them and you know they wont be getting neglected!

Maybe even buy them odd one or two more fish people said to increase the numbers and just explain they are a parting gift to your parents lol while you go and get ready to get drunk up to your eye balls and party like crazy.... wait i mean study at uni!!
