How To Put To Sleep?

Another way is to take a sharp knife and stab her through the head lengthwise. Horrible for you to do, I know, but it is instantaneous death.

I find this method the best if you can't chop the head off which I can't do either.
A bucket of cold water and add some ice, place the fish in the bucket 20 seconds it should take, but leave her in just to make sure she passed on, sorry.

When the water is extremely cold.

Abit worried about doing it in a cup she might jump out, do you have a jug.

This is what I choose to do with my fish and my comments are only placed here as opinion. This is a heated topic. I choose based on my knowledge from my training:

Oil of cloves is a topical anethestic and was used in the past to treat toothaches. Lidocaine (like at the dentist's office is a topical anesthetic as well). When we operate on people we really want to achieve 2 things, analgesia and anesthesia, that is, relief of pain and unconsciousness. IMO, when a fish is immersed in oil of cloves, it is essentially 'topically anesthetized', paralyzed, but, I am NOT convinced that the fish is unconscious.....none of us will really know for sure. We don't know if the oil of cloves causes stinging to the mucus membranes, eyes, etc on initial contact nor if the fish is motionless, painless but aware.

Extreme cold is an anesthetic. When applied to skin, you can actually cut the skin and feel no pain. Cold also can cause rapid unconsciousness. In fact, hypothermia is reported to cause a state of euphoria and clouding of consciousness. Fish, at least most of the types that we keep (tropical), are extremely small and rapid immersion in extreme cold water, in my opinion, causes rapid pain relief and rapid unconsciousness. I have never seen any of my fish shows signs of what I consider suffering. They stop moving immediately and appear lifeless. Some have stated that since fish are ectothermic, this doesn't apply....perhaps in cold water fish I would agree.

I choose to euthanize my fish this way, rather than oil of cloves. One must either make an educated decision for themselves, or, choose what is currently accepted by the masses as what is humane.

Added: although I would never use blunt force to euthanize my fish, nor advocate it, one fact is for sure: death is instantaneous

Not nice I know there no easy way of doing it to be honest.
R.I.P. little fishie

Next time place the fish in a small bag and have your other half flick the fish on the back of the head "your not killing a 6ft Ling" and believe me a flick from an adults middle finger on a 2-3" fish is like us being hit on the head with a 3ft hammer and will most certainly see the fish off quicker than 20 seconds and will be instantanious"

Its not nice whatever you do but anything is better than leaving them to be pestered to death by tankmates nipping chunks off them.

I really dont think the freezer method is all that nice, poor fish slowly getting ice crystals in its blood and dying a slow painfull death :(

The quickest method imo is a sharp smack to the head of the fish, instant death.

Everybody has different opions on this, hitting a fish on the head or cutting its head off is not for everyone.
So when a person chooses a method they feel more comforable with don't make them feel worse because some members don't approve of it.

Sorry wilder wasnt my intention, i know its hard for some people (im an angler so really i have no issues) its easy for me to rant on about the easiest methods without taking into account if people have the personallity to carry out the act.

Sorry Jenny you did what you were able to do, wasnt my intention to make you feel any worse than you already do.

Wasn't having ago a you kev, it's just that alot of the time members seem to say what they would do.
In the end its up to the fishkeeper how they do it, and not to make them feel guilty that's all, as it not nice doing it anyway.

Sorry to hear about your fish.

I am not going to get in a debate with the best way to kill a fish as I dont want to start an argument with certain people on here...
The best way is not freezing or cloveoil, but enthanol which you can get from farm supplies and horse supply shops (I thinks its horse rub or something?)
Its quick and painless and costs about £15 for 5L and a little bonus is you can drink it if you feel inclined as its 100% alcohol :hyper:
