How To Pick Healthy Neon Tetras From The Lfs? Is There A Way To Avoid

I'm no expert but I think my neons had NTD, they lost colour and took ages to die - sometimes seeming quite perky. One survived - presumably has some resistance.

One of my five glowlights also succumbed to something at the same time - not sure whether it was NTD, or not.

I've since bought three cardinals - to keep my lonely neon company and hoping they are immune to NTD. They all shoal together (if you can call it that when there's only four of them!) - the neon seems to think he's a cardinal and he bosses the others about - but all now seem very healthy and I plan to get some more cardinals.

I agree that they aren't hardy fish and I wasn't trying to imply that they are; however, causes of death or illness is not always NTD. I just don't believe that NTD is as frequently occuring as sometimes seems to be suggested.

I expect you are probably right. If somebody knows about this disease and they have a number of neons die, its probably all too easy to blame NTD, rather than looking closely into other reasons why this may have happenned. At the end of the day, they need a mature tank with excellent water stats. Perhaps its easier to blame the mysterious NTD than something a little closer to home.

I don't think cardinals get NTD, as they're a different species.

FYI, here is a view from neal monks that says that cardinals can suffer from NTD. However, it seems to be more induced at the LFS...

Cheers

Why don't you add 5-10 cardinals and see how it goes cardinals are way prettier and get a bit bigger than the neons or 5 neons and 5 cardinals :D
