Hey Folks.

Am here on a potentially bad note. My male VT (A deep blue betta nicknamed MZ) has not been eating, and not been his usual self. I had changed the filter in his 2gal tank a day or so previous, and then I noticed his change in demeanor. Rather then swim to the top to get food, he hides in the lower corner, not near all his plants. I did some quick checks on the water, and the only item that was a bit concerning was the Nitrite (I think? Tis the one that the kits make turn orange) to the tune of a little above 5ppm. I was a bit concerned about changing the water right after a filter change, as we want to keep the good bacteria in, yes? Nevertheless, I did another water change (60-70%, added some sea salt) and hoped to not stress him out too much more.

After checking on him again last night when I got home, he seemed a little more full of life, but still is not interested in anything. It almost seems like he is depressed...
I tried to give him some pea bits to see if maybe he was just bored of the pellets, but no response either. He has moved from the bottom of the tank to hiding out at the top near the filter.

I am concerned about his wellbeing, and dont know what to do. I looked him over, and there is no sign of anything physical on him; his tail is kinda drooping, but no sign of holes; water quality shows up fine now too.

How do I help my little guy? I am not even sure what questions will be asked, or what information provided. My Girlfriend has some medications, but they are all for much larger tanks. I also dont want to risk dosing him with something that will do more harm then good.

Please help me figure out how to nurse him back to his usual self!

the bacteria IS NOT in the water its in the filter, if you changed the filter you took away all the bacteria! Keep an eye on him, being off the food isnt normal.

Chances are he got a dose of nitrite poisoning. He may also be constipated.

When you change water, do you turn the filter off and never run tap water through the filter until it is declorinated?

I assume you mean that you changed the filter media. What kind of filter and media? In the future retain a bit of the old media to seed the new. If it does not have a bio-wheel or a sponge, then it would be good to seed the new media.

On my tests Ammonia is yellow to green and Nitrite is blue to purple.

It is never a good sign when a Betta does not eat. I would fast him a day and until he shows interest in a pea or daphnia to begin with.

Keep his water changed--even daily if he shows illness.

Betta can get depressed. What was changed?

These are just some ideas to look at. It is hard to say for sure with so little info.
