I have a space on the wall above the sofa bed which is a bit blank and I just wondered what the sensible minimum thickness (front to back) would be for a tank. Obviously it would be for small fish but, proportionally, it would be very long so they'd have a good swim length - rather like a lap pool :)

what width are you thinking about? WCMM's are fun to watch, swim fast and are quite small. Give me the HxWxL so i can work out summat for you

6" for fish which did not get over 20 mm, I would say. The only two species I can think of are ruby tetras and green rasboras (not emerald microrasboras).

gosh, 6" is tiny, that would be almost impossible to make any water current in except from forcing the fish onto the gravel!

I would personally say 10-12"

Unless like Kitty Kat said, with tiny species

white cloud mountain minnow Tanichthys albonubes ;)

I feel that 200mm would be the minimum width, you'll find it hard to accommodate equipment, décor etc in a tank of width <200mm.

Not that I advocate buying them, but my consultant's surgery has one of those 4ft long picture frame aquarium thingies. It's on the wall, looks like a framed photo, but it's an aquarium. It looks very narrow, depth wise, around 5 or 6". Great for the bored patients to stare at whilst waiting their turn, but I don't know how great it is for the little fishies in there (some kind of tetras I think).

I asked the receptionist who looks after the fish and she said they had someone that came in to do it.

Gosh, theyre so lazy they cant be bothered to maintain their own aquarium, our dentist has a 1200 ltr tank with a truly immense filter in it, more tetras and guppies than i've ever seen!

Or maybe they're handing over the work to someone who actually does it consistently and knows what they're on about..

Yes, I think so, KittyKat. It always looks pristine. I don't think receptionists would have the time to do aquarium maintenance lol. The doctors there certainly wouldn't either as they are too busy seeing patients.

I would love to know how they actually do water changes on something like that. Must be a real pain (stepladder involved?)

But, no, I don't like the idea of them, no matter how pretty they look. Not fair on the fish really.
