How Often To Change The Filter Cartridge?

I have just read again somewhere a snippet about only changing filter cartridges when they are really old... Is this true? I have been changing mine (HOB cartridges) monthly as the instructions say but am wondering if they will last longer. What's the verdict?

All they need is a rinse in used tank water when they become clogged and slow the filter down,and basically wait until they fall apart before changing them,some recommend only changing half the filter media at a time when you do

All media (excepting carbon) can be used untill it more or less falls apart. As mentioned by previous poster using old tank water to clean it (gently and not all at one time)

Carbon cartridges (if used and most don't) should be disgarded after a few days as they will leach back into the tank once full.

Most, if not all filter manufacturers suggest a regular purchasing of their replacement media or cartridges as it returns them a handsome turnover but as seasoned fishkeepers know it's entirerly unneccessary
