How Much Longer Till Birth? They Are Born... Now Some Questions

add a few floating plants to the main tank then let her out, this way if she has the fry they can hide in the floating plant and avoid being eaten :good: good luck

My platy gives birth in a community tank and as long as there are places for them to hide (a couple of plants or a rock with some plant coverage) then they should survive for at least long enough for you to notice them.

I use a small net to catch them and normally I get them all but a few as a few will go to the bottom of the tank to hide. If it is the first time she's given birth then it's likely to be a smaller broad, but perhaps bigger fry. :good:

Fry are very good at hiding, so don't be too concerned if a few disappear for a few days, they can easily reappear - good luck. :)

take a look at the area B, this is a smallish box shape, this was taken a few hours before her drop but this was her first drop so thats why she werent big

Big Bertha! I would keep her in the breeder.
Totally agree with this!!!!!

You cant be 100% sure that this is her first drop, its the first one that youve noticed more than anything.
A platy of her size is at her 3rd drop, when platy first full pregnant, pregnancy goes un noticed because they only carry a few eggs and as soon as they are born they are usually eaten, the 2nd time she will have more eggs so be a bit bigger and the 3rd time she looks like she gunna explode, the 4th and 5th can be quite small drops due to the stress on her body from the previous drops but this is still noticed by swelling.

unless shes come from your own home bred fry and youve kept her seperate from the males until she reaches a good size which would be about 5 months old to be the size she is. you cant be sure that its her first drop.

so, a fish like this will only drop a large batch on 3 main factors.

1 shes over 5 months old
2 shes fed on live food prior to breeding
3 water changes are upto date

with these 3 things she will produce large amounts of fry per drop

Oh, well if they aren't born by morning, I'll put her back in the breeder. She isn't too old, but long enough to have two batches I guess. I've had her for about 6 months.

No babies last night. She's not hiding in plants, or anything, she is just hanging around with the male platy. Well, more like the male platy is hanging around her, and shes sometimes running away. Is this normal if you only have one female?

when she does have her babies keep a couple of the female fry so the ratio is right, as should have one male to 2-3 females but your in no rush because if shes got places to hide from the male she'll be ok.
