This is not including fish or decorations....I dont even want to know how much money I've spent on this hobby- makes me a little bit ill considering all I have left is my 5 and 6 gallon betta tanks :(

First Tank - $420 with Fish

55 Gallon: Bought for wife - I really didn't care about fish. Was a 55 Gallon start kit with the works. After some decorations, gravel and several unfortunate dead fish, several more fish which were incompatible and then finally fish that lived peacefully together we had spent about $350 (stand provided by us...)

Since this time, most of fish have been moved to a 35 gallon community tank and this tank has become an African Mbuna Tank. Cost of 16 Mbuna, 3 Synodontis and 1 Pleco about $152. Fish are of medium size now and worth about $287 if purchased at the fish stores (I believe in growin my fish out if I can rather than paying the extra money for the larger and fish). Substrate for this conversion only ran $5, though for pea gravel. Rock works provided by the local river for free, so that part of the tank is cheaper. Overall end cost for the current set up is likely around $420

Second - $160 and Third - $82

Purchased together -

35 Gallon: Purchased used on Craigslist. Came with the works minus heater for only $30 (yes, thirty). Spent about $30 on a heater. Another $15 changing out the substrate (wife didn't like black rocks). A little bit on on decor (most of it moved from 55 Gallon during transition. Current stock of 4 Kribs, 7 Green Tiger Barbs, 1 Pleco, 2 Spiney Peacock Eels and 1 Black Ghost Knife ran about $85, Peacocks Eels came with another tank I purchased later and were basically FREE.

10 Gallon: Purchased at the same time. Pruchased for $10 with filter and light. Introduced sand for $25 and shortly after killed the filter so spent another $15 on that. Rock decor another with fake bambo decor was only about $20 total. Current tank mates - a single Green spotted Puffer and some small South American Flounder cost of about $12 together.

Fourth Tank - $85

40 Gallon: Another Craigslist tank for only $40. Aweful decor which I sold for $25 on Craigslist bringing cost of tank down to $15. Cam with a Dwarf Gourami (gave to Pet Shop), 5 Inch African Leaf Fish (Sold for $20) and 2 Spiney Peacock Eels. At this point the take cost NEGATIVE $5 - that's right - $5 in my pocket plus two Eels for taking in tank with the works (minus heater).

Bought heater for $25, new gravel for $15, some plant (about $20) and a Green Terror Breeder Pair for $30. Total Cost $85.

Fifth Tank
- $120

50 Gallon: Yet another Craigslist tank purchased for $100 - really nice looking Marineland tank. Came with works including TWO filters minus (again) heater. Sold 8 inch Oscar occupant of tank for $20 before tank even arrived. Cost down to $80. Bought a few plants about $30. Purchased and dropped in about 60 Convict Fry for $30. Total cost of $120.

I won't include fish or plant prices ect in mine as those change. Just tanks and equipment -

30 gallon community- £22 Included a fully working Eheim 2215 Classic external filter for free, still working and going strong after 6 years. All I needed to buy was the Hood which cost me £15 , heater came from my brother who had a spare one so that was free. Bought the tank from a car boot sale

12 gallon female betta tank - £5 , Fluval 2 - £21 Heater - £15 Bought the tank from a car boot sale

5 gallon Aquatart 320 male betta tank - £8 , Rena Filstar filter - Came free with the next tank I'm about to mention - Heater £15 Bought the tank from a car boot sale

12 gallon tank( spare) £1 - Came with a Rena filstar filter which I use in my 5 gal betta tank. Since this is a spare I have no heater since it's not set up yet. Bought from a car boot sale

5 gallon plastic Algarde tank - £4 (empty/spare) Bought from a car boot sale

5 gallon Glass Hex tank - £5 ( empty/spare) Bought from a car boot sale

3 gallon Clearseal tank - £10 (empty/spare) This is the only tank I have ever bought new from a shop, and will eventually become the basis for a steampunk shrimp tank.

Needless to say I am a massive advocater of getting tanks from car boot sales. Small tanks of 5-10 gals are the most common ones I find.
