This might be a simple one. The heater I probably need is 18" long and my entire tank is 21" high. When you add substrate, it's going to be touching. How much of the heater can stick up out of the water?

Thanks!

not much, i think all the glass part needs to be submerged.

There are various types of heater but the main body of internals need all glass submerged. What wattage heater do you need as most of them come in smaller forms nowadays to fit varying tank sizes.

If you are buying a huge heater capacity, it can be found in differing lengths. If one brand is too long, look at the other brands. Another way to gain height is to place the heater at an angle. Most of mine are at about a 45 degree angle so a 24 inch heater would fit into a 24 inch tank with room to spare. Almost all heaters have a line drawn on the outer cover showing minimum submergence.

Yep, my heater is diagonal in the tank! Easy solution!

<knock> DUH! I didn't even think of diagonal. Although it would be nice to have it as straight as possible. My tank is viewable on all sides.

lilacamy931 --> it's a 100 gallon tank so I am assuming I need 300 watts.

I'll have to explore all of the brands.

I have a 300W and a 250W in my 120 gallon tank. They are not on all the time by any means and I could probably unplug one of them in the warmer months with no temperature problems. The second heater gives me some insurance against a heater failing and no longer heating. It would make it so the temperature of the water would drop quite slowly.
