Hi all!
Just wondering how many times I can divide my ten gallon tank for bettas - I have to house my friends while she is moving - she is keeping her original tanks to get them ready in the new house, and asked me to house her bettas in amongst my tanks through dividers...

So my question is, with a filtered and heated tank, how many times can I divide the ten gallon tanks I have?

2 would be best to give them room and you could keep corys shrimp or snails with them but you could go 3 at a squezee but you wont be able to keep tank mates.

considering the tank is filtered and heated...could it be possibly stretched to 4? with 2.5 each with filteration and heating?

reason I am asking is that I have 3 ten-gallons available and she is giving me 10 bettas - so, along with mine I need to house 11 betta fish!

Is 2.5 gallons each, considering they will have filtration and heat acceptable?

The tank is heated and filtered, but is it cycled? How long would you be housing the bettas? Those are two imperative bits of info to express to us to determine the answer.

i personnaly think its too small but some will agree with me others will say its fine i personally would got for 3 sections at the most.

These are tanks I have had running for over a year - all cycled (if they weren't by now I would be seriously worried! haha)

And the 2.5 each would be for 2 weeks max - then they would be taken back by their original owner

aslong as its just for 2 weeks the 2.5g should be fine just keep up with waterchanges and make sure all the sections gett filtered

If it's only for a couple of weeks then it won't be a problem. You can always remove the dividers afterwards by scraping the silicone away with a razor. You could the re-silicone one divider in each tank ( or just a couple of tanks ) if you wanted to have some divided betta tanks for yourself after the owner takes them back, and that would give each male 5 gallons of space each to swim in which is really the kindest minimum.

You will need to closely monitor the water chemistry if you put more than 2 in a tank. Although there would be no problem dividing a 10 gallon into 4 or even 5 sections, the filter in each of your tanks is only cycled to a level that will support one betta. Once you add a second one, you have doubled the biological load in the tank. The filter can probably respond to that much load change but much more than that will be a stretch for the bacterial colonies. You are looking at 3 or 4 compartments per tank and that may well mean lots of water changes during at least the first week of fish sitting.

Like others I'd personally say 3 sections max but I guess if it really is just for two weeks 2.5g would be okay. But just for 2 weeks though :)

2.5 gallons is lots of space for a betta... Isn't that what is recommended ?? Im about to take down my 5 gallon and 6 gallon divided tanks and put up a 10 gallon divided in 4 for my boys this afternoon.

No, 2.5g would only be fine for the shortest time that you state.

The gallons are acceptable, its about the Length of the sections being smaller than the height.
