How Many Otos?

ATM I have 1 in my 180l

And I know they should be in groups.

But I was hoping on getting the numbers up to 6 but Im not sure if there will be enough algee for them all.

ATM I think there's plenty for just one as my glass still gathers quite a bit, and there are plenty of plants. With more to come soon.

I also bought some algee wafers I think there called... But I don't understand how to use them because the packet says take it out after 20 minutes but my oto doesn't know it exists...

i feed my otos at night when the lights are out,they always manage to find it,i would increase the numbers,it will make them feel more safe and you will see them alot more

I have no experience with Oto cats but a word on the algae wafers - sometimes it takes some fish awhile to register they are food, so keep trying for a few days.

Do you leave the food in all night?

I notice it disintegrate after 20 minutes.

At least add another two for now and see how they get on. Feed at night and always in the same corner, they will eventually learn. Mine eat a variety of food and I have very little algae in the tank. I feed king british catfish pellets as opposed to pure algae wafers.

You can add a slice of lightly blanched courgette and they might enjoy this too.

I tried putting a lump of cucumber in but it just floated away -.-

Stick a teaspoon (a stainless steel one) through it and that will hold it down, but there's so little nutrition in cucumber you might as well not bother! You could try courgette, lightly cooked shelled peas, blanched lettuce (a good green one, like cos; not iceberg!), sweet potato, mango, tomato (an end slice with no seeds) or apple.

Cucumber is well worth giving to your fish - it provides superb roughage for grazing catfish where bulk is very important in their diets for digestion rather than small amounts of nutritionally concentrated food. If you want an alternative to a teaspoon to sink your veg, there's a little invention called the "screwcumber" on the market - there's always a few on ebay
Take out the uneaten wafers when they start falling apart and keep trying him again with a fresh one until he realizes it's food

There are microscopic things we can't see. Mine will spend ages devoting themselves to one rock, cleaning it meticulously, when it looks perfectly clean to me already.

They will find scraps of food and you can supplement with veggies like described.

But more importantly you must add a few more, they don't tend to last long as a single fish and must have company.

Im waiting for pay day on Thursday and Im going hunt for them!

altho.. My oto has been on its own for 3 weeks...

I messed up on first buying my fish and got 1 cory 3 neons, 1 molly, 1 oto

so i have been building up there numbers -.-

I have 6 oto's now and a cucumber sat waiting for them...


my original oto doesn't know it exists still(its been there 24 hours)... does this mean there has been enough algae for him to eat?

It's more likely that your oto hasnt recognised as food yet; don't worry, it'll get the hang of it eventually.

Incidently; cucumber is not that great a food as it's mostly water; courgette, shelled peas, blanched lettuce (a nice green one, like cos; not iceberg), tomato (end slice with no seeds), apple, sweet potato and melon (as tomato) are all more nutritious
