ive got a 125 ltre tank and would like to find out how many fish i can safely keep in the tank b4 it becomes a hazzard to the other fish in the tank

all depends. You could fit tons of some fish, one or two of others, none of some.. demensions, and what fish u have currently and what ones u want to get. Try timstropicals.com and goto the gallery for some fish ideas, the compatibilities on taht site dont always include everything tho so dont worry if the ones u want arent on eachotehrs lists, just ask here first.

Like murphy said, you can find suggestions for stocking on lots of sites. My own preference is that you go to your fish store and look at what they have that you might like. Remember that for your tank you are looking for things that don't get more than about 4 inches long. When you have a list of some fish you might like, come back and give us the list. We can help you avoid some of the mixes that just won't work and then help you get down to how many of each. Your kitchen chairs and mine will likely not even fit in the same room because they are so different. Its the reason they have 50 kinds at a furniture store. Why would you let me furnish your fish tank? Its really about what you like or yourself, all we can do is help when you want to put together things that won't work.
My personal favorite is endlers live bearers, see my avatar, but many fish stores don't even carry them and lots of people don't like them because they are very small.

as he said, check a fish store, but dont buy right away. Local and chain fish store employees across the globe have told members of this site things that are about as far off as you could get, just to get the sale. Some are good, i have good ones around here thank god (except one cranky dude but i avoid him), but some arent worth the time and just want the sale. Therefore, look, then check with us. As stated above, you decide what u personally want..

and as always, have fun

Hi Jezzer,

The rough stocking rule that gets used is "one inch of fish body (not including fins) per US gallon of water." Your tank is a 125L/33G tank, presumably with gravel, so 25 to 30 inches of fish body with average good filtering. The way you guesstimate fish body is to take your list of desired species, look up each one in one or more databases (either here or google for others) and write down the average maximum size the database says they grow to.

Most fish you see in fish stores are juveniles. So you may see a type of fish in the store that always seems to be about 1 inch of body but it may grow to 3 inches. You need to add 3 inches for that fish to your total.

These rules are very rough and do not take into account real fish mass or how active some fish are. Beginners are better off stocking less fish than the rule says. Total stocking rules also turn out to be a rather minor consideration compared to figuring out which species are compatible with each other and which can share water environments with each other and are at a fishkeeping level that fits with your current skills.

As always, decisions about stocking a first tank can be worked on while the fishless cycle is preparing the environment for these fish so they won't all die shortly after bringing them home! Have you been through your 3-6 weeks of cycling?
