How Many Fish

Hello,

I'm new to keeping fish, so i need some help.

I've got a 100L tank. In it i have some live plants; 2 Pleccies; 5 Neon tetras; 3 Cherry barbs; 1 red-tailed shark and a couple of small snails, not sure where they came from.

I'd like to add some more fish but not sure how many or what sort.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Do you know what types of plecs you have already? What type of substrate do you have in the tank ?

We've got the Hypostomus punctatus - common plec.

Substrate is gravel

I must warn that common plecs grow very large and will outgrow the tank in the near future, so you should consider rehoming them at some point or upgrading the tank.
Other than that, i would get another 3 chery barbs and 1 neon tetra as these fish do best in groups of 6+, and perhaps some apple snails? They are very atractive snails that make an interesting addition to tanks .
What sorts of fish are you looking for? Something that shoals, something with color- an oddball etc?

Think i'm going to have to find a different Aquarium shop to buy from. If they had told me the Plecs would grow too big for the tank i wouldn't have bought them - too be honest they've given me no advice what so ever.

When i bought the shark i told them what fish i already had - the Plec and the Tetras and they just said - Yes one of those will be fine - they didn't even ask what size tank we had

Anybody want to buy a couple of Plecs

I was hoping to add abit more colour to the tank and if possible a different shape fish. I had looked at the ? fighting fish - red with long fins and tail.

Hello there
Any LFS worth there salt will gladly take the Plecs back for a refund or exchange.

Take some advice from the experts here (I dont include myself in that title just yet) and give it a go.

I did take a log back that i wasn't happy with and they weren't very happy about me taking it back and asking for a refund.

I went to this particular shop as a friend recommended it

give them a riong speak to the manager calmly and polietly inform him that his staff sold you these fish without informing you of how large they grow and you would like to exchange them for some more fish, he should be ok with this, if not find a better lfs,
id recvomend some more barbva and tetras and maybe some corydoras.

the fighting fish don`t tend to do so well in comunity tanks and will get there ass kicked by the barbs

The fighting fish (or betta's as they are also known) will not be suitable for your tank unfortunately as they do not make good community fish (they can be agressive, prone to being nipped by other fish, do not like strong current and cannot compete well for food with faster fish etc).
If you want some color in the tank i would either go for 4 guppies or 4 platies (3females and 1male, or an all-female group), these fish come in a huge variety of colors (pretty much any color you can think of) and are attractive friendly fish .

Regarding calling the shop manager - it was he that i saw regarding the log and he also sold me some fish without giving any advice.

Think i'm going to stick to Pet At Home store - further to travel but they have been great with giving advice, even when i have bought from the above shop and got into difficulties.

I think you'll find it hard to come by a local fish store that gives accurate and helpful advise, i think the best plan of action is to just research the fish you want yourself before you get them and only take what lfs say which a pinch of salt- afterall, i'm sure if they could sell you 5 fish that grow to 3feet long they'd give it a try.

end of the day an lfs is a busness, and so wants to make money and will employ people who do that.

and if you have a half decent petes at home near you your lucky as most of those places are poo...

as tokis said just research what you want and you should be fine
