.... i currently have it around 1/3 from the water surface , should i lower it or does it not matter :good:
 
If you are on about Siphoning the output end(where water exits) has to be lower than the input end(in the tank)

I usually place a container on the floor, this means I can put the input end anywhere in the tank.
(Be careful of small fish)

no , i was on about the positioning of the pump suction strainer for the external filter :good:
 
You want it as low as you can, without it sucking up your substrate, if you have sand. Most of mine are a couple of inches off the bottom.
