got my second tank sat upstairs containing approx 50L of the finest cumbrian air!

my filter is in the 90l tank alongside the fluval 106 both running.

how long will it take roughly to grow the bacteria so i can put it in the tank upstairs?

Take a little of the sponges out your old filter and put it in the new filter to speed things up.

Or you could do that and put the new filter in your new tank but have a mini-cycle.

Is the 50L that's full of air a new tank ? with a new filter im guessing?

Which filter will you be adding to the 50L? If your 90L has been running for a good amount of time then the 2nd filter shouldn't take to long to build up some good bacteria. You could just take some media from the main filter on your 90L then add this to the new filter? Then put the new media in your 90L filter so it will transfer from its current media to the new media, Or just put all the new media in the established filter??

iv got

fluval 106 running as my main filter for the 90l, had the fluval about a month and the tanks been running since april

filter that came with my new 50l tank i instantly set it up and got it running alongside the fluval in the 90l knowing it was gonna be a week or 2 before i got the sand, plants, thermometer etc

so by the time the stuff arrives, will it be ok to put in the new tank with less than half the amount of fish thats in the 90?

plus i wont be able to transfer the media from the fluval as the fluvals sponge is a flat piece like a slab, whereas the new filter is a rectangular block shaped bit of sponge that goes round the tube that sucks the water up, bit like a square shaped ice lolly with the stick in the middle and the ice being the sponge if that makes sense? lol

The problem with running a filter in a tank to mature it is this;

Your current filter, the Fluval, already has enough bacteria in it to cope with the bioload of your current fish. That means there won't be enough free ammonia in the water to encourage any new bacterial growth in the second filter.

You're very unlikely to have a decent load of bacteria in the new filter to be able to stock the new, smaller tank, even if you leave the filter running in your main tank for a long time.

You'd be far better off putting the sponge for your new filter in the Fluval; if there isn't enough room, then cut the sponges up so there is room!

Leaving it the way it is now might grow you enough bacteria to shorten a fishless cycle, whereas if you mature it in your Fluval, you'll be able to stock your new tank immediately.
