I was at my LFS yesterday and I did something I swore I would NEVER do. I bought a betta that needed rescuing. At the time he looked like a VT, and he was not moving much in his cup. The reason for that, as I picked him up to check him out, was pretty apparent. He was simply too big for his cup. His body is close to 2 inches long, and his standard cup was just not letting him move much, other then up and down.

I'm not sure why, but after about 20 laps around the store, I knew I was taking him home.

He is in our crystal wine chiller, a one gallon ( I made sure to measure before putting him in - I was just at a loss as to where to put him frankly) Anyways, a plastic plant later and a safe perch in my SU's computer room, he has a new home. Feeding him is a challenge. He is so scared of my hand when I drop the pellets, he dives to the bottom. I don't think he's eaten yet at my house. (his food is on the bottom of his bowl so far) Oh and I was quitee surprised to discover he is really a very handsome CT.

Right now, due to his previous cramped lifestyle, his spine is bent in 2 different directions. When I first let him go yesterday, I was really worried. I didn't think he'd be able to make it to the top for air, as he was so accustomed to "sitting" on his tail and simply moving his head up for air before. Even in his new bowl he was wanting to sit on his tail still. Today though, he is moving about more, and I've noticed his swimming has improved since yesterday. He doesn't sit still as much as yesterday.

My question is this: How long do you think before he is "normal"? Or is "normal" a possiblity? Will his swimming just improve?

It'll take time and tlc, at least a couple of weeks. They spend so, so long in those cups that he may not ever fully unkink, but at least you gave him a nice home! That's all he's ever wished for, I'm sure.

As for feeding him, maybe try hiding yourself from him for a bit. Stand back a foot or so, or slightly to the side when you drop in food. I'm sure he'll get over that soon enough.

Good luck with him!

Thanks Wuv! :good: I was kinda thinking about 2 weeks to really tell for sure. I just hope he can develop some muscles to swim as each day passes or something. Such a shame really, he's a cute little guy.

Oh, I need a good name for this one too. He deserves something special, he's got a long road to haul.

Well done to you for getting him. He may be ok in a week or so ..on the negative side quite a few I have rescued have passed away after a couple of weeks, but at least he is in safe loving hands. :good:
