How Hot Is Too Hot?

@Mola Mola - I have quite a few older ones and I accept them being 2-3C out... but if yours is at least 5C out (and is brand new) then I'd say it's a bad batch. Perhaps you could order one online from a different store (so hopefully a completely different batch) and return your current one for a refund when the new one arrives? Just out of interest what brand/size is it?

It's a 100W Elite heater. It came bundled with the aquarium, but I'm pretty sure that I could get them to replace it with another one.

I have now set the heater to 20C and left the lid of the tank open, and the thermometer has finally fallen to 30C. I'll keep an eye on it, but I do think that I am going to have to get another heater.

Just a thought - The thermometer isn't positioned directly above the heater is it ?

No. The heater is in the back right corner and the thermometer is in the front right corner.

EDIT: Also, I said that it was an Elite heater, it is actually a Hagen Elite.

Just keep messing with it untill the thermometer reads the temp you want. It doesnt realy matter what the heater is set at as long as you have the correct aquarium temp.
